it's more due to the fact a lot of people took time off to play and now just 2 weeks away they delay it for another 2 weeks. They should of anticipated it but instead work on seasonal events that no one likes honestly for some menial trinkets that people throw away and his attention is divided with ff16 as well. So I can see why some people are angry as hell
I understand your point that with good planning, a sw development team should be able to see whether a deadline is realistic, to a certain extent that's true BUT I'm going to guess that you haven't worked on any large-scale software project, in any domain, because while you can put together a project plan, and put together a risk management plan, and hold all the meetings you want with (typically) multiple teams - on a project that could last many months or even years- that original deadline often does need to get updated. It's basic business time management. If you have good communication within your team and don't set unrealistic expectations you can know within the week of starting a project wether you will be able to meet a deadline or not unless something completely out of your control happens like a delivery truck derailing or a pandemic strucking the whole world.
And I've acknowledged that on my reason b), yet at least from what was said during the live letters it didn't seem to be the case.
I won't even get into factors that the team didn't originally plan for, but get introduced, such as (for example) corporate asking for new features mid-way into a project .
while that is true another thing why announce a date. If you announce you better make sure it is available by then. Don't announce a date and 2 weeks before launch say oops. What have you been doing these past months. I like Yoshi but he has himself all over the place doing ff14 and ff16. He took to much that he could chew and now he has spread himself thin. He has to realize he is human and working on 2 games at once is overkill.I will probably get burned like a heathen for saying this, but I can't help but chuckling a little at people who blame SE for their now wasted vacation. I'm sorry but SE never asked you to take time off for a GAME. You decided that all by yourself. And in so doing you should know that there's always a risk (however small) that things might not go as planned. (I'll give you the fact that this is a FFXIV's first, though)
That said, I feel bad for Yoshi having to make this decision. And as much as it might suck, I do prefer this over releasing the game in a rush. But that's just me. Atleast FFXIV Dev's do truly care about their players and want to give them the best gaming experience possible. That's something a lot of other game dev's could learn from.
I understand that those who had planned to take days of work for this are upset, they have every right to be upset.
I also understand that this was a difficult decision to make for Yoshi.p, which is why I think it was something they had to do.
My guess is that whatever they really needed to delay it for was something that can be fixed within 2 weeks, but would create an even bigger shitstorm then delaying the release for 2 weeks have created.
A simple cost vs cost, does releasing it in this state cost SE more then the delay? At the end of the dey SE is a business and money is what ultimately drives decision making. Good thing for us that they have understood that a good relationship with the customers = more money.
And I know that Stormblood had a really bad release, well the entire expansion was rather crap, almost made me quit for good.
But there is a major difference between then and now, FFXIV is bigger and has more eyes on it, Shadowbringer is viewed as one of the greatest mmorpg expansions. That changes this to a moment where failure is not an option, either the articles and videos about Endwalker will hail it as the greates mmorpg expansion to date, or they will talk about how it is the worst failure in mmorpg history. Binary I know but that is what the internet has changed every conversation into, utter garbage or a masterpiece with nothing inbetween.
And again, I think that those that are upset have every right to be upset.
This is key. I seen too much dare I say, apologists on this forum since the news broke to shame anyone expressing disappointment and being upset.
Have to say it is a little disappointing how some are reacting to this unfortunate news. We (Japanese players) are also upset with the delay, and have said so in the thread in the JPN forums, but also remark that while it is disappointing, Yoshida-san also took responsibility like he should have and was humble about it. So, while we're disappointed, most of us also gave words of encouragement and many were worried for Yoshida-san's health, even. Then again, it is extremely rare for people to take off of real life work to play a game unless they are students/don't work, so maybe it is different for countries where taking off for expansions is the norm. The few people I know who are able to do such things are, understandably, upset - but they still aren't antagonistic or accusatory towards the FF14 team.
I don't condone anyone giving hate towards Yoshida or anyone on the dev team for the delay nor have I really seen it being directed that way or even hinted. I'm more upset at the delaying of annoucing the delay with 2 weeks. I work in sys software development and as a fellow developer I can tell pretty early that this project will not meet the deadline, I don't suddenly notice it less than 2 weeks away from it.
This is the only critic I have for it.

Well this sucks, this really sucks. This was basically my holiday for the year.
Even an extra weeks notice would have been something. I wouldn't have been able to shift the whole week, but maybe I could have got a long weekend in on the new date.
This is understandable.
At the very least this will ruin Blizzard's plans to try and distract from the Endwalker release like they did with past ff14 expansions.
When YoshiP was so apologetic on the livestream and starting to tear up, I feared the worst and my mind went to Soken and thinking something terrible happened like his cancer came back more aggressive or something. And then hearing that Endwalker was delayed by 2 weeks and I thought... 'that's it?" I'm actually relieved that it wasn't something serious, but I do feel bad for the people who requested time off and now have to try to change it, sometimes that's easier said than done!
"We want bunny suits for guys!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Ishgard housing!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Viera!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Cloud's motorcycle!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Blue Mage!"-- OK! ✅
"We want the ability to earn past Feast rewards!" - HAHA no that's sacred.
