Some of you sound offended lol, didn't mean to offend anyone it was just a random thought I had. It's totally okay if you disagree, I wasn't criticizing the game for not having it or anything like that, it was just a random thought

    It is.

I wouldn't do it myself, but there's a reason why some open world games such as the Elder Scrolls and Fallout titles have 'survival' modes with fast travel disabled.

Survival modes usually come with a host of other mechanics and restrictions as well. Like hunger, thirst, tiredness, etc.

Just being at max level removes any threat of aggro in zones from prior to the current expansion for example. So nothing akin to a "survival mode" just by removing the option to teleport because there'd wouldn't be any actual threat. They don't need to implement this as a feature unless they're going to go the extra mile and make a true "Survival Mode" imo. Otherwise OP can just do what myself and others are suggesting with something akin to a Pokemon Nuzlocke challenge.

A true survival mode would be great, just thought it was a bit too much to ask. It would be cool to be able to switch on a true survival mode with hunger, thirst, tiredness, no fast travel etc. I just thought it was more reasonable to just ask for the no fast travel, since it can be done by literally just disabling one ability. Ideally yeah, true survival, but realistically I assume they have too many other things on their plate to even consider that.

But even if you "remove the temptation" via a menu or something... wouldn't you be just as tempted to toggle to save time? The argument falls flat when it's a toggle and not like a permanent mode.

So maybe go one step further then and make it more like a survival mode as mentioned above. Disable the faster health regeneration outside of combat, and give food a healing effect when outside of combat instead. Seems like an easy way to implement a hunger system.

And at that point... we just point at Exploration content like Eureka and Bozja/Zadnor, and we'll be getting more exploration content in EW as well. Zones with penalties for death, longer leashes for aggro, and more of an emphasis on on foot travel/dodging aggro.

A survival mode for the entire game wouldn't be able to function unless it was on separate dedicated server. At that point the onus is you and others that actually desire it to prove it before the company will dedicate the resources to development, much like the Oceania regions playerbase, through social media campaigns and such, went out of there way to prove they had the numbers to validate the cost of adding a DC there.

Yeah exactly, it would be an incredibly easy way to extend the eureka style experience without even having to add new areas.

You say it wouldn't be able to function, but why? Simply make an optional setting which; disables teleport unless the player is at an aetheryte, and disables health regen with health regen coming from food/potions. The setting is turned off by default, and also turned off when in a party, so it doesn't impact any duties. If you don't like it, you can just leave it off, it gives no advantages and just servers as a higher difficulty. That would function perfectly fine, I don't see any downsides to it. Am I missing something?

I would be open to them opening a server with no teleportation available, and aside from roulettes (which for obvious reasons wouldnt work otherwise) require the players to actually travel to the location of the content to queue for it in DF. I think it would add life to the world instead of everyone grouping up in hubs and the world being dead.

You'd actually see players who have business in different areas.

When I skip doing tele's I've seen that if you use the ferrys and fly you're normally about 3 minutes away from most places you'd need to get to and never more than 10 minutes way from anywhere in the world.

People say fast travel does not hurt game design, it is merely an option, but it does affect it. When developers know fast travel is available they design zones that are way more sparse, and don't have too much of note in them because they expect players to teleport everywhere. You also see animations for travel getting cut down, for example Airship travel has animations between Limsa, Gridania, and Uldah. It also has a very nice ship boarding sequence when taking the ferry from Limsa to Thanalan. But on all later content, the Gold Saucer, Ishgard, the ferry to Kugane those have been taken out and you just get a black screen because developers figure most people will be teleporting anyways and it would be a waste of resources, even if it hurts immersion.

Sure it has its perks, but personally if a server without it existed I'd migrate there because travel is part of an adventure MMO, and it's one of those things that people will skip it if they can most of the time, but at same time they also appreciate it if that's the only option they have.

Noone takes road trips to be in the car for a while, but being in the car seeing the landscape or with friends is also part of the experience and it wouldn't be the same without it.

What you are missing is that you can just remove the teleport button from your hotbar and never use it.
