Pronouns???

So im a bit confused. People want their pronouns respected but, why dont they just play as the gender they wish to be recognized as? This seems like it would solve the problem, especially if thats how they see themselves irl.

Edit:This is a genuine question btw. I'd love for some of the people advocating for this to explain it to me cuz i really dont understand.
