What exactly constitutes "very clearly a bait thread"? I've been called a troll before too, and I am of course not one! EVEN IF a user makes a joke topic now and then, why is anything posted by them later automatically a "troll" take now? I don't think it's particularly helpful to shoot down valid topics of discussion. If people choose to interact? Let them.

Yeah I definitely know you're not a troll. I've butt heads with you one too many times to think you would be. That being said, I like butting heads with actual people and not strawmen.

The reason posting in troll threads and responding to the troll is kinda awful is because the troll itself knows they're just trying to get you mad. They'll say whatever gets you responding to them and them alone. In turn you're not having an actual discussion with other users and the stances just get extreme-ified over time, to the point of the discussion turning toxic and nonsense.

This is kinda why bait threads and "feeding the troll" as it were are an issue, because even if the topic is legitimate, the troll does everything in their power to not have it be a legitimate discussion. Not to mention the countless times threads were made with nothing to discuss about, being objectively wrong to get a rise out of people. Something something November.

It’s easy to tell when someone actually wants to have a discussion about an unpopular opinion and when someone is posting just to get people to start biting at each other’s throats. The word “troll” might be thrown around a lot but it’s extremely easy to tell if something is a bait thread when the topic is something like “Miqote and Au Ra are ugly, discuss.”

Exactly. It is super easy to tell. I think at this point I could literally smell a troll from across the globe If I sniffed hard enough.

I guess sometimes it is not easy enough for some people with almost 6k posts.

For me personally there's a huge difference between ignorance and apathy. Anymore I usually fall into the latter wayyyy more often than the former. I almost always know when someone is trolling, but I've learned to just roll with it if there's some actual discussion to be had. I have my moments though and sometimes I lose my cool. I will never claim to be perfect.

To be fair, my last account had like a few thousand posts on it or something ridiculous. Post capped daily for ages.

Then I moved abroad and couldn't buy expansions for it because their system is dumb, and here I am to rebuild.

WoW's forums used to have a like/dislike system that had dislikes removed as they fostered echo chambers and abuse. Even their post flagging system is used abusively, to bury stuff they don't agree with rather than truly offensive or rulebreaking content.

We don't need that type of thing. Thanks, but no thanks.

A Helpful/Not Helpful system could definitely allay those issues however.
