It's also entirely down to luck. While it may have worked for say, Lianna's boyfriend. Others who stepped away, ultimately came back to find out the only house available on their server gone. Now they get to wait an undisclosed amount of time to get chance at another plot. Often times what prompts the absurd lengths people will go is the disappointment of loss to begin with. Someone who didn't luck out after stepping away, will be far more incentivized to rearrange their entire schedule simply to avoid being disappointed again.

At the end of the day, Yoshida and the dev team need to do better. And should be criticised for an objectively terrible system. When other MMOs earning significantly less than FFXIV does manage to implement a better housing system, there isn't an excuse. Either it's the sunk cost fallacy, where instead of scrapping a system that didn't work, they continuously poured money trying to fix it and now don't want to invest any more into it, or sheer stubbornness in trying to maintain a neighborhood feel at the cost of upsetting thousands more unlucky enough to get scoop up a house the second they're available. No matter who you blame (SE and/or the dev team), it's a terrible system.
