And another huge thing I completely forgot about at start because the difference is so enormous.

-Story, WoW has a nice story if you see it as a movie/book from afar, big lore characters and events are really great, the player driven story ingame though is another story, it is beyond stupid at times to making 0 sense in others to the point our characters are joked to be the dumbest murder hobos in existence, I excused it to a degree when I was playing since I felt it could be hard to incorporate player story in an mmo world but seeing how FF14 has handled story, it is clearly absolutely possible for the player story to make sense and feel realistic within the world, hell even new patch questlines in WoW often appear out of nowhere, meanwhile in FF14 they depend on previous world building and make sense as to why that issue has come up, and honestly the politics of the world within ff14 is pretty realistic which adds to the immersion.

Honestly WoW in my eyes will never really improve unless the devs start thinking differently and stop having that high end mentality, which wont happen any time soon which is why I pretty much uninstalled WoW after seeing how much better of a world FF14 is, it is a world that is definitely able to satisfy my mmorpg craving unlike many other mmo I tried and I honestly suggest to anyone who wants to enjoy a good video game.

I've always thought FFXIV was the best among all it's competitors currently. It's why I'm here (since HW). I was talking about this yesterday I think, WoW never pulled me in. This game did. I might criticize this game a lot, but I do so because I think SE could do better. I'd rather see this game thrive, and get better and better. Now, people may not agree with my opinions, but they aren't coming from a place of hate. I wouldn't spend so much money, or put so many hours into this game, if I didn't like like it.

Gotta add (speaking of WoW), it's actually pretty funny. As an example. My personal opinions are a lot of the time contrary to what I actually argue for here. I started the free trial or whatever, and at level 4 (ARR) I was hooked, I bought HW, and switched to au ra soon after. WoW? BORING. I actually thought WoW was super boring. I started a character from scratch, and also begrudgingly played a demon hunter or whatever, not only did I find the early game boring. I found the demon hunter, late game boost even more boring! I don't like boosted characters, or starts, because I feel like I haven't earned it, and I am missing out on the rest of the game.

What are you talking about? The announcement was great. New raid tier, new dungeon, new mounts and cosmetics, new zones. It's great.

At the end of the day, WoW is and will continue to be the better MMO. Focusing on high end content is great. I don't think you know what you're talking about OP.

I try and follow what happens in WoW because my pal plays it, but I'm not in the loop.
Can someone please fill me in on what's going on here?

At a guess, sounds like Blizzard announced that the next major patch won't be until this fall so they can address game play issues.

Which is not the mother of all content droughts. Mists of Pandaria says hi. 10 months of content drought going in, 13 months of content drought on the way out.

Also, their content patch won't drown out MoP's release regardless of what Puremallace thinks. At this point you've got WoW loyalists who could care less about FFXIV playing WoW whether it's good or bad. FFXIV loyalists who don't care what WoW does are playing FFXIV whether it's good or bad. Those who are playing both are far more likely to pick a new expansion over a content patch unless they're on Mythic raid teams shooting for #1.

I have tried WoW twice now. Both times because a friend really wanted to play it so I went along for the ride. BOTH times I had game breaking bugs in my starter area. My first character was wargen, their starting quest line can bug and you cannot complete it therefore cannot leave, become an actual werewolf, literally I was trapped. I had to make a new character that time. The SECOND attempt at WoW more recently with their new all in one starter area I AGAIN had a game breaking bug. My quest just would not update even after restart etc. So another character was made yet again. Add on to that audio bugs where it was stuck repeating. Then the story for me was in totally the wrong order cuz you are dropped off in the middle of one expansion somewhere. I was fed up within a few days.

Those bugs in starter areas, ESPECIALLY the wargen one is so atrocious. I googled the bug first time around and it has been there for YEARS. If they don't care enough to give their new players a good experience then I don't care enough to struggle through that buggy joke of a game. Navigating the place is hell. Nowhere is easily gotten to. If you get stuck they send you to a now outdated link half the time because they changed something and haven't updated the site. WoW to me is for people who have been playing it for years. Not if you are new and trying to get into it without a vet to guide you.

FFXIV has issues yes, I hate what they did to astro cards, I in general hate the homogenization of tanks and healers. I detest bozja atm still. But at LEAST I had 0 bugs as a new player, I wasn't lost as to where I was in the story, I can navigate the world without needing multiple google searches and on top of all that. I actually feel like my job has a place. Whereas in WoW as a feral druid I was quickly told I would not be welcome in raids. Idk how anyone plays that game, it seems they are a mess constantly.

They must be doing something right, their subscriber count continues to make this game look like an indie game by comparison.

How ill do you have to be to sit down and watch the entirety of Blizzcon just for more circlejerk material?

Not really, there's a site that uses a number of internet scouring algorithms to try gauge the population and sentiment of each mmo, WoW is top but the sub count fluctuates a lot during xpac launches which is why many players see their friends list die, ff14 is the 2nd biggest mmo in that list with 2.2m subs but it doesnt have the extreme flactuations WoW has and has a constant increase of players which is far better. Site is mmo population and is using the same algorithms for all games so even if it isnt completely accurate, the approximation and comparisons are decently fair.

More importantly WoW profits heavily from addicts and whales who might hate the game yet still play because they are too invested from years of "exclusive" "time limited" rewards, the overall blizzard product Maus have dropped in an expansion launch quarter yet non sub service profit has increased, something to do with WoW token gold price remaining low for so long after launch meaning there's a ton of whales buying tokens(and thus keeping the supply strong keeping the price low) to fund carries because that is the only way for casuals to get decent gear in shadowlands.

The way things are going, WoW is surviving on whales, extreme addicts and returning players who keep giving it a chance and then leave after a few months which leads to those crazy fluctuations, long term that isnt a good strategy because it is so new player/casual unfriendly while ff14 keeps a slow but steady rise throughout the years and that is a sign of a healthy and rising game that I wouldnt be surprised if it topples WoW in a few years, probably sooner if you remember how fast WoW pop drops a few months after a new xpac launches.
