A company as big as SE initiating a 'kickstarter' would go down like a lead balloon. It’s still just a question if demand and money though. If it takes 100 players buying in and that’s enough revenue to get it working, then it’s pure profit after 100 people. If it’s 500? 1000? It’s just a matter of time and money.
On the other hand if a huge code overhaul is needed, there may never be enough buy in to recoup investment costs, in which case it will just never happen.
Personally, I’m not sure why they could do the equivalent of a kickstarter for things like this. So we know what SE puts as a general price tag of X to happen before they commit to it. They should have a very general ballpark figure of manhours needed to do what we want, just need to see if enough players buy into it.
