He did have a handle on what he wants in life, just not what kind of person he would want to be with. What he lacked is experience, not finding himself.I am not sure why people believe that Rodrigaults idea was to isolate him. Honestly our NPC had not even a clue at what he wants in life, he does not even know what he would like in someone else. It makes perfect sense that he would need to find out more about himself first before he can even think about dating someone else. Heck I am often told that you need to love yourself first, because if you cant even do that how would you love others? So in that way his advice would give him a better understanding on who he is, what he likes and what he wants in a relationship. After that he could have taken Berts advice and choose a hobby (which he would have found by knowing what he wants) and there he might have found a person he liked..but in the end just going out and doing something else other than work will probably give him a better chance.
If that was the case, by your line of thinking, then why have any event at all? Why have any choices?
Not really, what you want in life includes the sort of person/people you'd like to share it with.
He hadn't found that in his normal daily life so it makes more sense to explore, spend some time learning more about yourself, trying out new hobbies, meeting new people, etc.
Sure but we don't actually know and either way it would have been nice to see. Similar to how it would have been nice to actually get to see the other plans play out rather than just reading them.
But he already knew about himself. It was the only thing he actually had an answer for. Astrid is the only one who considered who he was (a person focused on his duty with little free time) and gave a proposal tailored to who he was.Not really, what you want in life includes the sort of person/people you'd like to share it with.

And meeting people was what Astrid's proposal was about, and wasn't what Rodrigault's proposal was likely to get him.
Unfortunately, all three proposals were decent, but the execution of all three were extremely flawed as well. The developers probably took this event less seriously than a lot of the players did.

They did ask him quite a few questions about himself and he was not able to answer even one of them. Also to know what kind of person you want to be with, you have to know what you want yourself. Do you want children? Do you want someone that share your view or is it fine if they dont. Do you have a moral compass and how would that influence your relationship? Knowing yourself is the first step to even know what you are looking for.
If he is a workaholic and has barely any time for a relationship then he needs a person that can accept it. Would he be willing to change his life for someone else? All of that can imo only be truly found by knowing what you want in your life. And after that you can take up a hobby and maybe meet someone there. Or meet the person that knows your future partner.
Astrid just wanted him to hit on anyone who might not be to dependend on him. This can turn bad fast..and at the end the partner she had for him was already in a relationship herself, making that situation really awkward.

tbf, this seems like the reason why he's having issues in the first place. His entire life is his work even when he's not working, issues around relationships are why that sort of thing is considered bad heh.
In all honesty, it doesn't seem that odd to me that Astrid won, considering the people who didn't vote for her had a split vote between the two others--and since she's cute and had the Valentine's colour gear, the amount of people who did vote for her isn't surprising at all--despite her advice being terrible. Personally I picked the cute yellow boy because yellow is my favourite colour (yes I know the gear is dyeable but still), he was adorable, and I liked his advice best. I knew he wouldn't win but it was whatever to me

Their takeaway from the event should be that any future voting system needs to be tweaked to not be so unfairly stacked in favour of one candidate. Personally I think the winner should have only affected the decorations and the Warrior of Light should have been able to go through with the quest chain associated with their chosen candidate. That'd be a fair compromise.
Additionally, we should have had the option to flirt with Ywain ourselves if we wished to. Being complimented in such a way by the saviour of the world would have done wonders for the guy's confidence even if he wasn't interested in returning the feelings.
