Like how, lorewise, the player character in WoW doesn't really exist, even though the gameplay story centers around what the player character does.

The player character in WoW exists, but only as a generic soldier/mercenary. All of the important deeds are credited to major lore figures instead. See all the memes about Thrall killstealing Deathwing.
