Why do you like this game?

Just a genuine question, I want to understand what it is that keeps such a large number of people interested in this game, because while I'm currently playing it and "enjoying" it for what it is, for the most part for me it just feels like a very average MMO at best.

When I look at the game from a combat stand point, it ranks one of the worst I've ever seen for complexity and overall thought required to get the best out of your character, the global cooldown is bad enough, but the overall lack of skills to use sometimes amazes me and this is the number 1 thing that makes me question how this game has such a large playerbase.

Then I wonder, is it the end game content? I mean, it can't be, surely? there's pvp which I sometimes question why it exists at all, for the casuals there's the run once a week nier raid, and get 450 tokens a week from the same 4 boring dungeons, then for the more active pre-made people theres the ext/savage content in addition, my gripe with the entirety of the PvE in this game is that for the most part, once you've experienced it once, it's virtually the same thing on repeat without fail.
Boss mechanics work off patterns that go on repeat, so once you remember that there's not much challenge even in the hardest content (providing you can find a group to pre-made with that doesn't have the memory of a goldfish), there's no real reaction mechanics and stuff that really tests a players skill, not unless you count "remembering" as skill.

I can only assume the case that this game isn't my cup of tea, I really enjoyed the story of the game, but I just expected something great about the end-game content of this game to hold such a large playerbase, and for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm missing out, I level alts, I've tried doing gathering and I only managed to get 1 to 70 so far which was a far-cry from "fun" for me, crafting has never particularly been my thing either and I don't think I've managed to get one passed 30, so tell me, what else is there to do outside of farming dungeons for glam? or using the pose feature to take screenshots with? what is it that's keeping people playing?

I like how it feels like a MMOJRPG instead of just an MMORPG. I choose to main this game over WoW simply beacause of graphics. The graphics on this gamem migth very well be some of my favourite ever

Having an FC, helping people out in that FC and trying to clear the 'hard content' keeps me in the game. I agree with pretty much everything you said though

also, I feel like a lot of ppl probs just play this one cuz most other MMOs suck. If MMOS were to rise again I doubt XIV would stand much of a chance in the market. It isnt bad but its onyl got its story, graphics and the title Final Fantasy goign for it if Im completely honest. Lore is good but WoW is way better. Combat is ok but most ppl prefer action. A good game but certainly not a spectacular one. (This is my opinion plz dont start a fight)

The story is bad. The lord of the Warcraft world migth be the best in any game ever. Its WAy more deep than XIV, and XIV's is GREAT, but at least imo, lore-wise, wow is just unbeatable (again, not talkign about story, story wise, wow cant even hope to stand a chance against xiv's amazing writting)

    No.

In fact the very creators of that lore do not respect it. What's more, now it turns out that everything you've been told "might not have been like that" because it's the vision of the titans.

And to have to read books out of the game because the game itself doesn't know how to tell his own story is sad, to say the least. Maybe extensive, but of quality... rather low.

Like I said, the story (which for me, how the lore moves on forward is part of) is certainly not the best (I do still like it personally, but objectively its bad writting just to get on recmmended pages on youtube tbh) but the world of warcraft (not the mmo, but the game saga's lore) is so so so so much more in depth than XIV. Its a lot more abundant, and XIV kindaaa copies a lot of things from it, like many others. After all, WoW's storytelling and lore direction is clunky at best, but as a world, Aezroth is just more amazing than Eorzea imo (I really like Eorzea though, this is my main game after all). Plus on some things the devs of XIV also do some extremely onsensical things (the reason why viera are leaving the forest is because ther world is in danger. Ok. But for whatever reason only the females do so, weh nby lore, it would be much more common for a male to just feel so tired of that lifestyle that they could want to leave. Or how fem hrots are, unless they have lots of babies at once, pregnant for liek their whole life?)

Unfortunately, that lore is also at odds with gameplay. Any lore that is used to restrict class and race combination is just bad lore (same with FFXIV's lore to explain gender availability, though at least there is hope there).

Deep lore is good for a story-only medium, like book/movie/tv/etc, not when it would impact gameplay like in a video game and even the story of the game itself. Like how, lorewise, the player character in WoW doesn't really exist, even though the gameplay story centers around what the player character does.

I think I worded wrongly. WOW's lore isnt great. Azeroth's is. Eorzea's one, I must say though, is more consistent and you can see how everything connects and there are close to no nonsensical things (just a couple ones) plus it does fit the gameplay until you go to the mogstation (like riding in odin's horse or a giant fat cat lol)
