SE excels strongly at exactly one thing, which is very important to nearly the entire fanbase: storytelling
They will always adhere to this, playing their games will always be like reading a giant story book.
I understand. Shadowbringers has been my favorite expansion to date and it took me a long time to finish it because I've been having a hard time in real life and some days I just wasn't in the right mindset to do main quests. This doesn't mean that I hate the game, I'm a legacy player and I was quick to finish every other expansion but sometimes life happens. To be fair I'm lvl 58 on my summoner and I'm in heavensward now. In fact I just got to a point that I can't move forward until I hit 59. It's more interesting that ARR for sure but the msq still takes a lot of running around talking to people and whatnot. And that's ok, it just seems like when I have an hour or two to play and I spend that time reading and traveling....well it feels like I'm not actually playing I guess.
My advice? Take it a bit slower. Don't devote every day to MSQ, some days it can be fun to log in just to do dungeons and not worry so much about questing. This makes the experience a lot more relaxing and also means you won't hit roadblocks as often. Could also level alt classes and pick up gatherers/crafters if that's something that interests you. I know that a lot of people want to rush to the endgame but depending on the sort of player that you are this might not be necessary.
Hey OP,
I totally get where you're coming from. There are times when I want to get a good amount of progress without all the fluff and filler. There are a few options (most of which have already been stated) for you.
1. Deep Dungeon: This is the Palace of the Dead (PotD) and Heaven on High (HoH) dungeons. They're basically grind dungeons where it's a quick pick up (not even restricted to class parties / Tank - Healer - 2 DPS) and you go in and just mow things down with your class. This honestly sounds like what you're looking for - https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...e/deepdungeon/
2. Roulettes: This is an option in the duty finder menu. This is more restrictive and can cost a lot of time due to waiting on the traditional roles to join up. It's a nice breather from Deep Dungeon due to you playing your class more traditionally.
3. Squadron runs: This is also a nice option if you don't have a lot of time, sick of quests / leves, and you're bored to death with Deep Dungeon. This does cost a little more investment with your Grand Company and leveling them up. Also, it takes longer since the AI is terrible. The nice thing to look forward to is Trusts (similar to Squadron) in 71+ dungeons have incredible AI and give a lot more flavor to the dungeon with texts. https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/w...urer_Squadrons
Those are the top 3 ways I can figure you can spend some time in the game without reading a bunch of quests. You do have to get through the MSQ, but take heart, even the devs agree this grind is silly and are working on condensing it. Also, the expansions are -much- better in pacing. You've got a lot of content to get through, but it'll go by a lot faster than ARR.
Also, just a sidenote, many players refer to chocobos as chickens. It is an affectionate tease to the mascot. Please do not take some players here as representatives to players in game or the devs themselves. I've noticed a serious shift with the tone in these forums. Just take what is said here with a grain of salt. FFXIV Reddit is another form of 'forum' community that may be a nice resource of player intel for you.
Last thing, this game is absolutely capable of being the game for you. Yes it is story heavy, but the devs continually add different options for a wide range of players, b/c they're great business minded people at times, unlike posters here. Don't give up, and have fun
Last LAST thing - I've been playing this game since 1.0, and as much as I enjoy the story... it gets super longwinded at times. Up until Shadowbringers, I skipped every chat bubble Urianger gave in a nerdrage fest.... This is coming from an older gamer who played numerous old school RPGs on those classic consoles only spoken in myth at this point. So, I guess as a 'veteran,' I agree with you, if that means anything ^^;

If OP is 50 like it says on the side, can you blame the guy?
ARR is terrible to go through. People legit quit this game because of ARR.
I admit to even skipping a handful of ARR's dialogue because it was just too much.
I got sick of it near the end of it all.
We can all agree ARR is just ridiculous enough to deter players than even SE is stepping in, finally.

Am I going to offend people now?...
P.S. That was the name I picked from day 1
Yeah and you read people minds? Being the supreme authority on what I think, I can assure you that when I say I think something, I think it. That's all the proof you need to know what I think.
Probably..
Is it, though?
Dailies. Special events. Dangerous mob areas. Worthwhile or even necessary (beyond MSQ tie-ins) dungeoning. PvP decently rewarding to one's leveling and understanding of the later game. Open world grinding with some actual depth or interaction. Professions rewarding to one's actual vertical progression even when not spending twice as long on them as the leveling itself. So on and so forth.
All these are parts of your average MMO as well. Yet, they've largely been made superfluous by increases to lower level experience. Heck, unless multi-leveling, which the game will later punish via weekly lockouts and currencies if dipping into more than a single armor type, the MSQ's long been nearly sufficient for leveling even by itself.
The question seems to be less a matter of "Why do I have to just do quest after quest (I hate questing/RPGs/Final Fantasy)" so much as "Why is there so little need or reward for anything outside of the MSQ?" And... that seems a very reasonable question.
Exactly. I finished Shadowbringers later than everyone else because of some things in my personal life taking my time away from FFXIV. It was weird going through all of those absolutely gorgeous, new areas and not seeing a single player around. It's not just a problem with older areas, but with the new places as well. Open world plays a huge role in most MMOs and it sucks that we're not getting this here.Is it, though?
