We can't say "this raid doesn't affect the main story at all" until we've done it - and optional content doesn't mean it isn't canon. Non-interactive stories like the "Tales From..." series and the lorebook treat those optional stories as having happened, and we've just been through an expansion that links three of the major 'optional' storylines (CT, Alexander, Omega) back into the MSQ and makes it clear that we canonically did them. The Binding Coil is also heavily MSQ-linked, forming part of Alisaie's story in particular, and I suspect the Warring Triad may be tied back in soon.

So I find it unlikely that this entire raid series will be self-contained and not affect anything outside itself - and for those of us that do obsess over the lore and try to understand how things work and where the story is going, we can't just voluntarily ignore an entire raid series if it does shed light on some part of the story or world history or the nature of how the shards work. The issue is whether the things it reveals are going to be "FFXIV things" or whether it's going to bring in something from Nier and make it inextricably part of FFXIV's world, especially if that happens just because Yoko Taro wants to make a mark on the game rather than because it makes sense.
Thanks for wording things a lot better than I could Iscah and Renato. Yoko seems like a pretty extreme character and I really don't trust that the 14 staff actually have any control over this anymore, at no ponit in any of the coverage I've seen of this have I gotten any impression that the Nier team has any interest in 14 or it's setting and that is about being true to there game.
