I don't think I have ever seen a single male avatar in Cid's attire, Gosetsu's attire, or Hien's attire. But I have seen several wearing Aymeric's attire, and Thancred's Modish attire. Don't think anyone would wear Raubahn's outfit if his were ever added...

But, women having absurdly unique designs is normal.

Except this isn't something rare. Many companies do this and XIV's is probably one of the most sterile in regards to dev/community interaction. It's filled with generally non-answers even with things related to the lore. Hell they couldn't even give a straight answer to the Sandwich question last Live Letter, a waste of a question imo. With the way most companies are pushing for Games as a Service you start noticing XIV isn't unique with their presentation.

If you really want to present an interaction between devs and the community that every company should strive for then Warframe would take the cake with its biweekly Devstreams generally filled with info outside of story spoilers. What SE does with XIV is passable at best.

People only get Cid's outfit for the goggles. Also Raubahn's outfit is a pixelated nightmare.

Raubahn's outfit would popular. A lot of people who play male characters really dig the gladiator aesthetic he has going for him. The main factor is that the quality of the textures on things like Yotsuyu's outfit and Lyse's outfit are far better than what we see with Hien's outfit.

That, and the fact male NPC wardrobe design isn't interchangeable. You look at Y'shtola, Minfila, Lyse, Ryse, Alisaie, etc, and if you separate parts of their outfits you can easily mix and match with existing material ingame to create something else entirely. With the guys, well, the majority of what we get only works with itself. While the girls get a "could be anything" design to clothing, the guys seem to follow a "obviously samurai, obviously commander, obviously warrior" kind of aesthetic. would be nice to have it the other way around more often.

So is Hien's, and that still happened.

Damn... Sucks to be a dude.

Your outfits suck. You can't have eyebrows. You can't have beards. You can't be bunnies.

Meanwhile, Yoshida is hype to put in Y'shtola's 3rd outfit.

What does "absurdly unique" involve as opposed to simply unique?

But I do get your point. (I'll add Alphinaud to the list of unique outfits though.) Some of the imbalance does seem due to circumstances at least - Papalymo never got an updated outfit, and Urianger had to remain consistent since they can't update the version of him at the Waking Sands, and couldn't have him apparently switching back and forth between scenes.

Having given Thancred and Urianger job artifact gear for their 5.0 outfits is a doubly bad move as far as availability to players goes - firstly they didn't get unique outfits to begin with, secondly they can't be added to Mog Station because it's job gear and they probably don't want to let anyone wear it freely.

I feel like it all might come back to the relative ornateness of male and female clothing in the real world. You expect female characters to have more elaborate outfits than male, therefore they put more effort into it and it doesn't seem as worthwhile to put that time and development cost into the male characters. At least that might be the logic they're going on.

(Personally I'm all for more elaborate outfits for both genders, but I seem to be a minority on that front around here at least...)

Cid's outfit has the severe restriction that it's an all-in-one costume (besides the goggles) and you can't equip individual pieces, which cuts down on its potential usefulness. Yda and Minfilia's outfits have the same issue.

I've seen a few people using Hien's outfit, though only one wearing Gosetsu's. I think it looks a bit deflated on anyone other than a Roegadyn... although the hakama could be useful. I'm actually tempted to get it for my Au Ra alt because I like using flowy pants and sandals for him, and it comes with both of those.

Also, if they added Raubahn, we'd logically have to get Merlwyb and Kan-E as well so it wouldn't help the gender balance much... and then someone would complain that "we got two female costumes and a male costume that's a a dress".

I don't know if that's actually a problem, at a character design level. I'd rather see characters wearing something that suits their role in the world and story than something that "could be anything".

Generic clothing is a bit more feasible for traveling gear, but things like Y'shtola in a gothic witch dress in the swampy jungle she's been living in for the past three years, alongside a whole tribe of people dressed in a different style entirely.... it just seems odd and out of place.
