Never understood why people were so triggered about those real terms, if square had given the skills names which told you nothing about the aoe shape like in other fights, less people would have complained about it.
Larboard is what gets me(naming wise, mechanic is fine), its outdated by a long time, it was stopped due to confusion when yelling it out so Port became the replacement for Larboard, i'm fine with using any name they wish to give so long as its appropriate, Koji wanted to use nautical terms then he could have used current ones not so obscure that even in RL it will never be used again XD
Guy butt is best butt <3
Left and right aren't specific enough, because they either change with your orientation, or they need additional modifiers to identify who's right or left you're referring to. When you use Port and Starboard, it's independent of your orientation at any given time, so it's always the same for everyone in the party.
Left and right wasn't too bad in other content. But using out of date terms causes more confusion I feel then just using left right up or down. You can look at the boss and adjust with the simple words everyone will know, it's a risk to use outdated terms cause not everyone will be on the up and up. Like me... I NEVER heard the starboard and whatever EVER until that boss. And it still bucks me up. I really wish Koji will just go back to using LEFT and RIGHT. Larboard is admittedly slightly archaic, but starboard is a perfectly normal word that every educated person should be familiar with. And once you know what starboard means it is kind of obvious from context what larboard must mean.Left and right wasn't too bad in other content. The problem with this is there ain't no one that knows what the hell these terms mean as precisely 0.001% of players have ever used nautical terms for their intended purpose (or ever really), and even less an outdated term like larboard that isn't in use anymore for a fairly obvious reason if you say them out loud to yourself then imagine a loud and chaotic situation where mishearing one letter could mean a dead crew.Left and right aren't specific enough, because they either change with your orientation, or they need additional modifiers to identify who's right or left you're referring to. There is a left and right in the ivalice raid and people can't dodge that, it's not the wording it the ability to read the "casting" bar on top of the enemy hp bar that people struggle with. Why do you think no one tanks? You have to know when a buster is coming to swap or buff.

And now imagine you are tanking the boss and he casts left or right but because you are facing the boss from the front right is actually left and left is actually right... >.>There is a left and right in the ivalice raid and people can't dodge that, it's not the wording it the ability to read the "casting" bar on top of the enemy hp bar that people struggle with. And no, the problem is not reading the casting bar. The problem is that a lot of people actually have problems to tell where is left and where is right, myself included. For some reason I have less problems with knowing where left is, but right is a problem. It takes me around 2 seconds to remember wich word stands for wich side, and thats too slow to react to the castbar.
Funfact: I have less problems with starboard and larboard than with left and right.
What you said makes sense, I guess that reaction time is just skill gap, some people are fighter pilots and some people can barely walk in a straight line. Practice and some content might be harder than other. I think you can do it.And now imagine you are tanking the boss and he casts left or right but because you are facing the boss from the front right is actually left and left is actually right... >.>

Making it sound like job, sure sounds like a fun way to play a game
