It's not just the aesthetic difference. I don't think most healers even care about that - it has nothing to do with how the jobs 'look or preform alike'.

The problem is:
They have made downtime even more mind-numbingly boring than ever.

Sure you had plenty of healers who did bare minimum; they would top the tank off if the tank dare reached 98% health. But the bigger problem for most healers comes from the fact that we have one dot, one dps. All of us now. All healers get one dot, one dps. That makes for incredibly boring game play. Don't even think about this in dungeons; healers gotta level up too. Healers don't just get to end game doing nothing. That means out in the open world? They get one dot, one dps. To kill everything. To kill story instances, participate in FATEs, Hunts, all of it.

The problem isn't that we have more healing abilities and buffed heals. Unless they do drastic changes to the amount of damage players get, they made healing even more boring for those who like to go the extra mile.
