The problem the devs have right now though, and Yoshi P specifically mentioned this as one of the many reasons why Hrothgar was chosen over Male Viera, is that people have their own preconceived ideas of what a male Viera looks like, and its difficult for the dev team to meet that expectation (the amount of people I have seen going "Male Viera needs to be small" is huge, which completely goes against Yoshi Ps own vision for them, and he is well aware of that).

The "smol manbuns" contingent is smol itself (even if I personally support it), and from what I've read of them, they almost OVERWHELMINGLY are of the opinion that, while it'd be great to have the women taller than the men for a change, they don't honestly think it would happen. It's something they WANT, not that they EXPECT, and I've seen nary a thread bellowing "SMOL MANBUNS OR RIOT". Even if Yoshi P made the claim that this contingent is why we can't have male Viera (and if he did, I missed it - when did this happen?), he knows quite well that very few are likely to quit over it. (And if people quitting were a concern, I'd say that dropping males entirely is much more likely to inspire ragequits than not building them the right way!)

No, I think the primary factor is as stated elsewhere in this thread: the devs really wanted Hrothgar, the fans really wanted Viera, there wasn't enough time to do two full races, and Yoshi P thinks male Viera would be "weird" anyway. (That, I'm pretty sure, is Yoshi P's only "vision" for male Viera: "Ew, no.")

Rereading the interview answer I realize that it doesn't specifically mention this demographic, rather focuses on the dev teams fears. The quote is "We knew we only had Female Viera for reference, so we had no idea what to do for the Male variant. We would have to use our own imagination for that. There was fear about how we would approach that. Perhaps an elezen body with a miqo’te face and bunny ears. Would this be the right way to add this race to the game?"
