Depending on what source you look at, Phoenix and Firebird is one and the same. So let's look at what is in game.

The description says:
"The Far East is home to numerous legends concerning birds of flame who sacrifice their lives to save the world, only to rise from the ashes of destruction to rule the skies once again. The Firebird is one of those legends...made a mount."

That is pretty much exactly what a Phoenix is described at. A benevolent bird enveloped in flames that saves humans and is reborn from its ashes after death.

Oh, I don't have have the bird so I am unfamiliar with the description. It does sound like it's lore is based off the Western phoenix, but has the appearance (and name) of the Firebird. I always thought it was just straight up a Firebird. I just need to work on getting the rest of the birds.

I concur, the EX primals often get unneeded exaggeration which cause people to shy away from them.
