I'm not particularly interested in tone policing, personally. So long as people are posting within the confines of the terms of service there's little need for backseat moderation. By all means, if people think I've stepped out of line then they're more than welcome to report any offending posts. I'd expect nothing less.

As for the obsession with 'upvotes', I don't particularly care for them. I value people saying what they feel, rather than saying what they feel will get them the most upvotes. On a board such as this, it doesn't take long to work out that certain posters will be highly upvoted based solely on who they are. I've seen multiple cases of posters putting forward intriguing, thoughtful theories only to receive little to no upvotes...

...only for a more popular poster to quote them, reword things slightly and have that post be highly rated. It's also not terribly difficult for people to link a particular post elsewhere to have it 'brigaded' if they want to be petty. Reddit is more susceptible to that, though given how much easier it is to make new accounts there compared to here.

I'd strongly recommend watching the Black Mirror episode 'Nosedive', on that note. It's an excellent take on how flawed the obsession with being seen in a certain light can be.

As ever, I'm just going to embrace my stance of 'agree to disagree'. If people don't want to reach out and smooth out any issues, then that's fine - but then they don't really have much ground to stand on when it comes to tone policing. Especially when accounting for the fact that not everybody posting here is from the same cultural background/country.

All that aside, at this point this is little more than a circular discussion. The people who are interested in the Discord have either joined already or will in the future. Those who aren't interested in it likely won't join it - and that's fine, but for the sake of this board not becoming a bitter cesspit I'd request some common courtesy and a 'live and let live' approach.

For personal thoughts and theories, I agree.

But for gauging the feelings of a majority of people on the forum, then surely that's exactly where upvotes are useful?

I wasn't saying it "because it would get me upvotes", but because others might be thinking the same thing and could then upvote rather than writing another post saying the same thing.
