If you do crafting an selling on the marketboard, it is a paid advantage, as you get 20 slots for item selling with every paid retainer.

And don't forget the storage. If you really do active endgame crafting, with only 2 retainers you have to throw away alot of mats as you will run out of space. And you have to gather them again when new recipes appear. With more retainers you can store all of them. So you save time when a new patch kicks in. As faster you are ready to sell, the more gil you can make with it.
