I don't agree with those who say you're whining. You didn't say anything that isn't true. I'm sorry for the negative responses.
You posed a legitimate question. This game doesn't present its intended leveling options very well.
Levequests used to be the intended meat and potatoes of leveling. Then Yoshi-P announced last June that leves would be taken away from being the main focus, and repositioned as solo/casual content, as he wanted to give us what other modern MMOs offer - a variety of leveling options.
Options such as:
- Main scenario quests
- Traditional quests (called sidequests in this game, something I'm personally not a fan of, since that makes them sound trivial)
- Behests
- Instanced raid dungeons
- Beastman Strongholds
However, those options are still being built and barely past the starting stages of being set up. Content is still pretty thin, and this game has yet to fully realize its future vision.
Also in the levequest announcement, Yoshi-P said this:
This is a huge complaint of mine, because right now it's a very contradictory statement. Old-school mindless grinding, a la FFXI, is one of the fastest ways to level right now. You can't stand in Ul'dah without being inundated with shout spam from people putting grind parties together. How is that getting away from being a grind-centric game?We still have some ways to go, but Final Fantasy XIV will gradually shift from being a grind-centric game to one that offers enjoyment for all playing styles and circumstances with its ever-expanding variety of content.
I would like to see real quest-based leveling, where I could do nothing but quest all the way to level cap, if that's what I chose to do. Reason being, I play most of the time duo with my husband, and questing is what we enjoy doing together. However, questing is still so anemic, that's not yet an option.
