Most of Balance's specific job channels are very supportive to people that do bad damage as long they want to improve and are open to discussion. I believe most people that think that place is toxic have either never gotten into it or just read the general chats.

Expanding on popular jobs topic: It will really depend of the job. Jobs with high popularity can be easier to do comparatively better if most of the population are just really bad, this is a case of BRD. In the end the log's rankings are all about comparison. Jobs like MNK and MCH where you have lower popularity but many of those players are skilled speedrunners will make it really hard to compete.
