Whoooo boy. I've got nothing against you personally, and re-reading this it can come off very heated. I promise you I mean no ill will towards you, but certain aspects of your argument has been echoed all over gaming and it's been grinding my gears as of late. If you don't read this post I totally understand, but I just want to say my piece.
1. Players pay a minimum of $150~ USD to play this game per year, give or take. No, we don't have to "appreciate" them making a product worth that entry fee. The company makes more money in a day than most of us will in a year. But please, let's appreciate them for coming up with more ways to take money from us. (side note: you can appreciate this game for what it is and the hard work the devs do put towards it, but still call out when the publisher making the business choices are being ridiculous).
2. I'm so tired of "it's just cosmetics/glamour" in gaming these days. Cosmetics are part of the dang gameplay: they are (or more correctly: WERE) part of the bloody reward system. Every item added to the mog station is a missed opportunity for an in-game event all players could do to earn the item. Nope! How about SE pays advertisers out the wazoo for more marketing and promotions just so they can justify selling digital goods that cost nothing to reproduce at twice (if not 3x) their original mark up?
3. Piggy-backing off point 2: why should the consumer be forced to double dip to make up for SE's bad budgeting? I'm well aware FFXIV doesn't get to keep all of its monthly sub revenue. That's not my problem. How about SE budgets their projects better?
Well I would certainly hope so, because again, at least $150 a year is already paid per player. That's not including expansions, extra retainers, Mog Station sales, etc. If FFXIV ever reaches the levels those games do you bet I will quit and never look back if they refuse to go F2P, because you might as well be at that point.
And btw, I have played most of the games you listed. Most of those you didn't need the VIP packages or the armors you're talking about to get to end game. They were there to get you there faster. Which I don't see as any different from the jump potions we have now. I'm not against jump potions or the extra retainer service, but let's see them for what they are. Are they really that different from the jump armor and VIP packages in these F2P games? Really? Heck even in F2P games after buying the gear/VIP stuff you still have to play the game to join the end game. WoW and FFXIV you jump right in where everyone else is (yes you have to play to 70, but that's a ton of hours skipped that potion saved you).
Also I apologize now because I know this post will come off as incredibly snarky. I also want to make one thing clear: I'm not completely against cash shops in MMOs, even for sub based ones, so long as they're reasonably priced. The fact that one costume for one character costs more than your monthly sub is ridiculous and I can't understand why people keep defending that. You shouldn't have to be made to decide between your monthly sub and a costume to wear in the game that sub is for. F2P games and B2P games get away with those prices because that choice isn't there (though I still think $40+ skins is ridiculous in its own right. A skin shouldn't cost as much as what you paid for the dang game itself).
