I agree that the pricing is ridiculous, but it could be way worse. There are many MMOs that charge $40 to $50 USD for a single vanity outfit on the cash shop. Mounts can be $50. One game I forgot name of sells a pair of wings for $90, not joking. Path of Exile is one example of insane pricing, and I use to spend $80 in Maple Story for vanity that included hair style, dress, and weapon. $18 for this one outfit isn't even half the price you'd be paying for it in many other MMOs. These prices will seem much higher to you if you don't have much experience with CS pricing in other MMMOs. Yes I'm aware those are free to play, which could be why we pay a lot less for the optional CS stuff. I'm not justifying these prices, but just pointing out that you don't know how good you have it. As long as there are people with a lot of extra money to throw around, SE can and will profit. I just hope they don't continue increasing the prices.

Those mmos would never have my business in the first place. There's always someone that can do worse pricing that makes something look better in comparison, that doesn't make this pricing good on its own standing though. Honestly I'm not sure I'd have even taken up playing this game if I were looking at today's cash shop when thinking of joining.

Yet, the short time they sold their outfits in an actual outfit box instead of gacha, they were like... 8 bucks. Always dye-able too, with 2-3 parts dye-able, and even had custom character animations when you wore them.

If money grabby Nexon can do that, why can't Square? The only thing these outfits have above the ones Nexon did were the stupid set bonus and it has more pixels.

Ah, but Mabinogi made it's money from the rebirth mechanics, not the outfits. In it, you could pay like $15 a week to start over from level 1, but with all your stats folded in. You got one free rebirth a month. The power gap between people who rebirthed every week and those that didn't was insane.

Mab also made a lot of money selling pets that slowly became useless. Pets would produce resources as well as be companions, but they'd deplete over time, both in resources and HP. Nexon knew how to gouge their players like masters.

I never said it was good on its own. That's why I said the price is still ridiculous. Just pointing out that many of the people complaining don't know how decent this is on the grand scale of CS pricing.

That same company is also the company behind Maplestory. Maplestory also has Gachapon, which is random, but the outfits you can buy that are not random cost way more than the maid outfit SE is selling. Not sure why Mabinogi is cheaper. I know of the game. I just never played it. Trove is another MMO with cheaper prices where a mount is like $20, which isn't much cheaper, but average CS prices are a lot higher than what SE is charging.

EDIT: Nvm, just saw post above mine about why Mabinogi is so cheap.

Big question: Are those all MMOs that are P2P like FF14 or are those F2P? Because honestly if they are mostly F2P than they need sales to even survive, but if they are P2P than yes its bad too. But in the end just because somewhere someone does it even worse does not mean that SE does it right.

    Edit:

And I never had much problems with F2P games because my mind set is very different when I am playing those. I know that I can basically play a game for hours without paying a single Euro. So when I liked the game enough for me to play it a bit I was buying something from their cash shop (be it a mount, pet or costume) because this was my way of thanking them for giving me some enjoyable hours. And when I stopped playing them I barely "lost" anything because I did not need to invest in this. FF14 is different because we need to buy each expansion and on top of that pay a monthly fee. A whole year of FF14 costs me already more than all of my payments for all the F2P I ever played combined. So I will not stand back and not voice my opinion about their business strategy which as a whole company gets more and more greedy..(*looks at all the DLC for FF15*) They already lost me as a cash shop buyer or merchandise buyer when they introduced more and more stuff in there or changed the codes from merchandize to single character only after it being account wide for years...

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

    Difficult question.

There is only one other MMO afaik that has a required subscription and that is WoW. WoW has alternative ways to pay for the sub i.e. pay in-game gold buys prepaid gametime tokens which other players purchased with real money to sell for gold. These tokens can also be redeemed for Blizzard store cash. So, drastically different from FFXIV.

On the other hand there are many MMOs that used to be subscription but are now F2P with an optional subscription. I imagine the main source of lucre is still microtransactions or they wouldn't have converted to F2P in the first place.

SE is kind of unique(?) in that their digital games and micros start at "premium" prices to protect the brand, barring mobagames that are specifically F2P/gacha-based.

That being said I still think $18 for a costume set is ridonkulous but they do have mogstation sales.

I don't see how both of you replied to me asking me if the listed games were f2p or p2p and accusing me of not considering that when I cleary stated the following in my post.

I got the promotion items through pre-ordering a game I was planning on buying anyway so really it only cost me the extra money for shipping due to buying from the USA Amazon instead of the Canadian one. And I really only wanted the mount anyways. >.>
Compared to that $18 for one outfit for one character is an awful deal and feels like a rip-off.

It is on par with a lot of the outfits added to the cash shop recently but I'd argue that just reinforces how crappy SE's pricing is. It may not be as bad as some other games but that doesn't make it ok.

Honestly I wish they just sold an account wide version for $25.
