I absolutely agree that there is no excuse for furniture and gil not to be stored indefinitely. It is the one thing about the demolition that I've never been able to fathom. I'm glad to see more people starting to come round to the idea that it's unacceptable.

To the OP, I'm really sorry for your situation. I just hope that maybe some good will come out of this; ideally, you get your items back and we get a change on this policy, so nobody else has to go through this. For a lot of us, the things in our house are far more valuable than the house itself.

It's because housing was always supposed to be a gil sink. We have so many things adding gil into the game, but very few that actually remove gil. Housing was supposed to be one of those, and one that removed massive amounts at a time as originally you couldn't get it back.

Then as we all know with demolition they give you back 80% as well as the items, but to still be an effective gil sink they'd rather not give it back, hence the limited time to collect it in. They probably include furniture in that because it's easier for them to do it all at once and possibly also because any NPC bought furniture (small amounts as they are) would also be a small gil sink too.

Or in my cynic's view they want people to have to go back to the Mog Station to repurchase all of those housing items they paid cash for.

Apart the IRL issues that of course take precedence over housing on a game, you will get emails about the imminent demolish of your housing. It is hard miss them: you get at least one that let you know you are near the time limit, and this one with enough time to act, I say, one week about, and then another email right before it happens, to let still you act.

These emails cannot be missed. Maybe ignored. And I am not talking by "friends/third party/my cousin" experience. I had one house demolished because in a server I didn't play anymore so I let it be demolished. And I got warned enough.

The OP isn't complaining about losing the house. They expected that. What they don't like is that their belongings were only held for 30 days before being purged. I agree there is no reason not to keep the furnishings archived until the owner returns and let them decide what to do with them at that time.

My bad, misread a bit the OP. I wonder if you get email for that, too. At the time it happened to me, I retrieved my things so cannot say if it happens.

I've never received the email myself, but looking on reddit there are example of the email that gets sent out and according to those it does say:

Please note, players only have 35 days from the day of demolition to retrieve items from the resident caretaker. After that point, indoor and outdoor furnishings and gil can no longer be retrieved.
Again I am sorry to OP that you lost your items, but it does seem they do warn of this.

There wasn't really an option for me to get my things back until recently anyway. Yoshi-P could have called me in person, but unless he was paying my sub, I could not justify the cost when my wife and I were wondering if what was going to happen in the next week, let alone the next six months.

And I don't care as much about the plot. I mean, yes, I'm heart broken, but I knew what it was and it couldn't be helped. But they never told me I would lose everything, or at least not that I recalled. It was phrased as if I could always get them back later. Hell, I would even settle for half of the over 30 million gil I put into it and some of the trophies I put a lot of time into getting. I'm being punished for having real life issues, and as a four year FFXIV fan and twenty-five year Final Fantasy fan, it feels like a punch in the gut.

warning about it doesn't make it right. There's no reason to penalise beyond losing the plot/house. There's no need to further relinquish gil and items. They don't toss out your inventory and all your gil when you unsub, they shouldn't be doing it arbitrarilly in this case either.
