What do you think about item pop NM's?

ITT: people who support dated MMO ideas that do not work anymore.

FFXI was one of the few MMOs that actually allowed you to spawn NMs, how is that dated and doesn't work when many other MMOs didn't even attempt it? XI is also one of the few MMOs that allows you to actively control drop rates through certain mechanics (i.e the stagger system), so I'm curious as to how being able to pop and control drop rates is an outdated concept and doesn't work anymore o.O
