Just found this thread.. Great post OP. I wish I could articulate things as well as you did, even if the first thing people did was complain (be it humor or not).
Really hope they fix Monk. I kinda stopped playing when I hit 68.. Trying to finish the story so I can just gather...
Honestly this could just be because it enabled them to clear ASAP.. Continuing their main to get to the raid as fast as possible and using the job they are (probably) pretty darn good at.
That aside. Monk clearing raid isn't surprising.. It's damage is still like 2nd best? DPS and dedication aren't a issue, as some are dedicated and its DPS isn't the worst in the world.
but again, Monk's DPS isn't the big issue here, even if it's lower than SAM's.
Monks and samurais were taken because dragoons were in a much worse state then they are now. And it was also a very easy tier. And the first tier. So groups hadn't had the time to test out comps and see what works for them as much. If you look at groups clearing ultimate/savage coil. The numbers are MUCH lower for monks and samurais.
Monk is top 3, 4 dps in deltascape savage right now. But bottom three in ultimate coil. And bottom two in more casual content like the 24-man raid. So it is still very fight and composition dependent. Comparing it to another high dps, low-ish utility job like summoner, summoner is better by all metrics right now. FAR better. Speaking of which, I don't get people complaining about summoner and machinist in here. They are the most overbuffed dps jobs in the game at the moment.

I wouldn't call SMN a low-ish utility job since it has about the same amount of utility as a DRG or NIN. Rez is a very powerful tool and Devotion, while not as powerful as Battle Litany or Trick attack, also provides extra mitigation and healing, lessening the strain on healers so they can DPS more. Contagion and Radiant Shield are also fairly helpful, albeit highly overlooked, tools as well.
On topic, the problem really comes from how MNK gets screwed in maintaining GL; Nothing but long CDs with situational uses and a very short timer in general, make it the worst class mechanic as every other class with a similar mechanic either has them last for long periods or are quickly off their CDs.
If GL wasn't such a PITA to maintain, our damage could potentially be much higher but as it currently stands, we're just slightly above where we were in ARR and HW.
Still, they used Mnks Mantra and high damage to clear and not Sam's higher damage to try and do the same.
That's gotta count for something, even if people don't want to or will acknowledge it.... right?

True, although we are talking about a world first group. By the time 'regular' groups get to it the gear upgrades acquired will diminish Mantra's usefulness. Still, it's good to see a Monk involved, I really don't want another repeat of #deleteMNK
