I like to DPS, but lately it seems like every tank would rather pull so much that I have to spam cure 2 and if I stopped spamming and ran over to do a holy or something he'd melt immediately.

They're comparable because both are vital functions to your job not present in your role name (healer/DPS or DPS/support). They're also something you need to include in your rotation while performing your primary function. I currently main BRD and my first 70 job was AST so I'm aware of how both jobs work. That said, DPSing as tank is more similar to DPSing as healer than supporting as a DD.
This is strange, I play with tanks who make big pulls and I still have plenty of time to DPS on both AST and WHM (don't play SCH). On WHM I'm way too often either top or 2nd DPS in party too...

As a WHM main, I like to dps as much as I can get away with. I'm always looking for every chance I have that I can toss out an attack of some sort. I enjoy doing that kind of thing, though I don't believe it should be required for healers to dps. Though they should during the downtime between healing someone and no one taking enough damage to worry about more heals. Don't just stand there doing nothing unless you simply don't have the mp of course, which can happen depending on the situation.
DPSing as a healer (especially a WHM) is the most potent form of mitigation I have available to me. It is part of my job as a healer to decrease the amount of incoming damage to the party (so I have less to heal) and heal the damage that gets through that mitigation.
If you would like to argue against that then what are Noct AST's and SCH's shields? What is Divine Bension? Why is Protect mandatory for at least one healer in every group? They are other mitigation tools in our kits.
If you don't use them you aren't playing your class correctly. DPS is the same.
the difference between healers doing damage when compared to tanks dpsing or the mentioned bard's songs is because they in some form directly compliment their main role. Healers are not the same. Their damaging attacks in no way directly influence your healing abilities like BRD songs influence their skills, even a Paladin or Warrior's gauge fills up allowing you to improve your tanking skills. Dps skills are just something that was tacked on to give healers something to do during down time (said is optional by the devs themselves) and for solo content.
your comparison is just silly, and compares things that are incomparable.
fyi i'm not against healers dpsing, i am against min/maxers removing the players choice and go by the "my way or the highway" philosophy which is honestly tyrannical.
But why is playing incredibly poorly in a game where your performance effects the experience of others considered a valid option? You wouldn't go into a dungeon and immediately take off half your gear, would you? So why remove half of your abilities and more than half your GCD uses?
If you aren't DPSing as a healer you are playing poorly. There is no justification outside of blind progression where you need to be ready for anything at any time. It isn't tyrannical to expect a tank to use cooldowns or a DPS to know their rotation and it isn't tyrannical to expect healers to put out some DPS.
Edit: Also that "the devs said" comment is so pathetic I almost didn't address it at all but I didn't want it to come up again. They do not balance encounters on healer DPS, that doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. They don't balance encounters to be outgeared by 280+ ilvls either but I didn't throw on level 20 white gear when I got Sastasha in my leveling roulette earlier. Balance doesnt mean "only this way", that should be clear by now.
That is true. Also lots of tanks are coming into duties vastly undergeared haha
ABC, Always Be Casting. whether its healing, shields, buffs, debuffs or straight up dps just be doing something. Thats all i personally expect of healers.
