Is that taking into account time spent jumping at/away from the enemy? That's like 1 whole GCD wasted in time.Across 3 GCD's a Red Mage spellcasting will do, by some rough calculations, 750 Potency on average before Jolt II is unlocked, and 800 Potency on average after Jolt II.
By comparison the Red Mage's Enhanced Melee combo will do guaranteed 970 Potency over those same GCDs.
It should be noted that getting the most optimal spell combo (Procced Spell, VerThunder/VerAero, Procced Spell) is 840 Potency for 3 GCDs.
So yes, it always is worth it.
Who in any of these threads indicated that we wanted RDM to be a primary melee job? We just want it to be an actual hybrid, not a caster class with a single melee combo.
i hate melee part of red mage , you cant call it a mage because it use melee attacks , and isnt samurai already melee ? why not make rm a caster with healing and black mage spells
So maybe you should have asked for something like a Mystic Knight.
Because Red Mage has always been primarily a mage with secondary melee abilities.
lol@the aoe rotation thing in the beginning... isn't that like, all jobs? Well, can't say all... some of us have had our aoe rotations boosted, like drg. And SAMs AoE Rotation uses 5 buttons to do an actual rotation rather than just a single or double button spam.
I'm talking about travel time. Takes about 1 sec to pull yourself towards the enemy and another second to jump away. Almost a full 2.5 GCD.
I'm pretty sure it's more optimal to not use those abilities and just stay in melee range the entire fight. You get bonus auto attack damage and you won't waste time jumping towards/away the enemy repeatedly.

Except that (less than) one second travel time is easy to weave between GCDs. You dualcast a spell to get to 80/80 mana, use Corps-a-corps while waiting for the GCD go come back, execute the weaponsklills, weave in Displacement after using Redoublement, cast Verholy or Verflare. The jump is very fast, has a potency for damage so its a loss to not use it. Its ogcd pretty much a full 2.5s window to make the jumps and also dont give auto attacks credit. 56 damage when your soells hit for 8k is negligible even over a full fight, and to imply that auto attcks would make up more damage than corps a corps and displacement over the course of a fight is absolutely incorrect.I'm talking about travel time.
