Wynn is correct, crafting is a grind no matter what game is played. Much like enchanting armor and the like is also a grind, it's what keeps people playing MMOs.

And if something is fun, it isn't a grind.
There's some out there who find XIV's crafting fun and engaging which by what you said wouldn't make it a grind -- enjoyability is in the eye of the beholder, since we're all different with different tastes. Doing something over and over is what a grind technically is.

No, it's what keeps people watching TV and movies while pressing enter, or downloading a bot.

There is some merit to the statement that FFXIV's crafting is fun. It's fun when you are trying to put together an HQ finished item and trying to balance durability, quality, and progress. But SE intends to change this fun gameplay to an automated process where no skill or player-involvement is needed.

So basically the one redeeming feature about crafting is being canned.

And nothing is coming to replace it. Nothing is going to make crafting enjoyable, even for this elusive "some" demographic you mention.
