I have never been a fan of this whole 'optional shop' thing in the first place. It's a subscription based game.


You can not sit there and tell me that they didn't have the money for that without the mog station. They're a multi billion dollar company that makes more than Blizzard.

Sqaure Enix doesn't have nearly the profits Blizzard does. That being said, each product is allotted a finite budget they are expected to stay within. I suspect the Cash Shop is used exclusive to finance XIV while everything else is shared amongst the company. Either way, XIV has largely been a low cost high return venture that only recently got a jump in its budget total.
