I doubt VPNs would help much - VPN servers help against routing issues, but don't do much when it comes to sheer distance.
South american players who are currently being routed over Amsterdam would benefit a lot from one >.>

Before today my friends and me had no plans of transferring, now we're all contemplating the option once the free transfers become available, assuming the terms set for the transfer are good. Will see how things go, though, and how much of a benefit we might see from a VPN, especially the one of us who got fucked over most to the point that for her, FFXIV is pretty unplayable at a level she finds remotely acceptable.
My pings end up around the 170-190 mark, as do a friend's. Meanwhile one of my group of friends that's EU too was sitting at 250ms or higher. Until she logged off in frustration, anyway.

Ye it seems routing is a large issue for LA players atm, as well as even some East coast players.
