I remember getting married to my long time friend Senica on the Unicorn server in XI... Funny thing was she was/is married irl... Her husband played a female character so they couldn't get married at that time, even though she really wanted the dress. So i asked him if it was alright... Long story short. We got lucky on our first try at a date and had it in the Upper Jeuno Church. Surprisingly, people were very respectful. Anyways figured i'd share that. Now they both play FFXIV, it would be nice if they could get married this time around now that he plays a male character (of her making!).

Pick a good place to invite your friends and LS to. Get your LS leader or some other close friend of importance to macro up the words of a ceremony, wear your wedding, "gear," trade the rings at the appropriate times. Then, have your culinarian friend (so practiced at turning fish to sand) make a treat and trade to everyone. Include some well placed fireworks, march away while avoiding aggro after some screen shots.

Boosh, you're done, and it leaves SE from having to make any decision more than making a wedding dress and suit.
While your suggestion is hilarious.. it's also just silly lol.

I now pronounce you man and OMG DIREMITE RUNNNNN

I want a real wedding feature. I'm sorry some of you are men and can't understand why we'd want A REAL WEDDING with effort put in which men just can't do lol. We want a venue, we want a dress, and we want it to be magical irl right when we have a wedding? well for me i'm ok with my family not getting to drunk, and the venue being outside and thats about it. But for some women its all glamor and glitz, for us lorehounds and women in general, its also nice to take a look into Eorzean culture and see how things are done. One type of ceremony for all three would be a nono, there should be minor differences. Its just like the whole world doesn't get married to the same crappy march music we pick.

Not as silly as you'd think.

'First in-game wedding I played out, we did it more or less as Roland suggested. 'Couple of generic in-game rings, get the guild leader to preside over a ceremony somewhere quiet (the old monastery in the far North-East), play out the ceremony itself..

The other one was just me and the friend 'played my character's wife confirming it in the system so RO'd give us the ring items and the teleportation ability they came with, though the service in Lutie was kinda cute.

Anyway! I think RolandDebreton has a very good idea, but I'd suggest a few alterations:
    1. Yes, S-E should provide appropriate items. Dresses, Wedding Rings, Suits, etc.
    2. Rings should be acquired in pairs, which the system recognises as being bound to one another. These rings might have some minor special effects like maybe being able to let you teleport to your spouse or something.
    3. If two people simultaneously equip the rings, the game recognises them as married and maybe gives them an appropriate title.
    4. Private instances should be available for the ceremony. Either provided especially.. or just using a Free Company estate perhaps. This deals with problems like aggressive enemies or, more likely, trolls.
So.. yeah, really, same idea with just a little system support. From there players could RP out as much or as little of the ceremony as they like. It also conveniently sidesteps any controversy in that S-E just.. leaves out gender/race/whatever locks on the rings, whereupon they can hold their hands up and say 'We're not responsible for the actions of our players'.

That being said, even with this system I'd be all-for region-specific outfits. Gridanian.. oh I don't know, something like that wavy thing Nophica was wearing in the poster? Ul'dah something more covering and sparkley, Limsa something more uniform, traditional dress and suit in Ishgard perhaps, armbands, rings, etc..

As long as it's handled by NPCs and not GMs (like XI's system), I think it could be cool.

imo it should have some lengthy requirements, and some unique rewards (such as wedding bands, and wedding clothes). Ragnarok Online had a pretty interesting wedding system, and it allowed for a married couple to have PC "children", which basically turned a character into a "kid" version of them-self. It also had wedding bands that allowed you to teleport directly to your spouse. Married couples should also get MW/AH tax breaks.

Edit: Also in-game divorce should have some pretty hefty drawbacks. This would encourage people to think before getting married.

Oh right, the adoption system! Man that was awesome XD Although I suppose it'd be more work to implement here given it can't just halve sprite size as RO did (curiously it also imposed a stat penalty on people chose to be adopted and have their characters become children. I kinda liked that). Anyway something like that would also be brilliant XD

    But highly unlikely, unfortunately.

The rewards wouldn't be game breaking. Mostly aesthetic. That's also why I suggested major drawbacks for divorce (such as a hefty fine) and a lengthy process before you can get married, because this would make people think twice about getting married just for the rewards.

Also, I was just throwing ideas out, didn't realize that was grounds for the "gtfo and play another game" response.

Yeah, I've actually only experienced it on private servers, but it was a pretty cute system. Having kid characters would be pretty cool, but this game doesn't support alt characters as well as a game like RO, so I'd think it'd be unlikely. Maybe if you're married you could share a larger mog house instead?

.. Luckily however it doesn't look like the Eorzean realms have anything much against homosexuality anyway so, well, yay!
Okay, this is getting my thumbs up for both laughs AND truth.
