Formerly Rounnin Tiankeris of Kashuan; reborn as Yongdi Washou of Hyperion.
May we continue to walk in the light of the crystal and restore Eorzea to its former glory.

No just no....-=DISCLAIMER=-
Okay, apparently people are completely blowing this whole thread out of proportion. I was only proposing the idea for in-game marriage - regardless of the orientation. Also, not once did I mention in the original post did I say anything about the in-game marriage feature being more important than character progression, in-game lore, or tweaking gameplay or the user interface.
Get back on topic, and leave the moral-political-ethical-controversy-rhetoric-babbling for another thread.
-= ORIGINAL POST =-
I remember in-game weddings being a feature in XI, having weddings between PCs and all. I thought the idea was nifty after all, having only seen a wedding attempted in an MMO only once when I was playing WoW on Korialstrasz. Of course, it was a public spectacle and there were trolls galore, someone actually shouting out that the bride had syphilis or something...Anyway, I remember the wedding ceremonies in XI were by invite only or something, and while progression, lore and the aesthetics of XIV are important there should at least be some sort of opportunity to have some actual role-playing going on.
The acronym for RPG does stand for "role-playing game" after all, and the fact that our characters have surnames instead of just a single strand of letters and numbers like so many other MMOs now, it'd make for an opportunity to implement other features like name changing as well, granted that if one does marry in-game it could be for free or something like that. Who knows?
The whole idea is rather outlandish, I know, but it'd be nice to see something else incorporated in-game that'll set XIV apart from the rest.
-=Extra Features Suggested by Posters=-
Included in this section are suggestions that came up throughout the course of the thread. More to be added when I come across them:
- Incorporating same-sex marriage.
- Have the ceremony in an instance, away from prying eyes.
- Have guests be able to either tailor their own attire for the ceremony or purchase some from an NPC vendor several days before the ceremony.
- Give Culinarians a special recipe for the ceremony, and foodstuffs obtained thereafter have potential buffs.
- Having the ability to "divorce" a player with potential consequences (i.e. Being unable to remarry or loss of benefits, etc.)
- Include benefits, however slight they may be, for the married couple.
-= Results as of 29 October 2011=-
31 of the participants in the thread are for in-game marriage, 8 are against it.

Not that I ever partook in any of the ones in FFXI, or have ever even seen an in game wedding since way back in Everquest days I would still be for this idea, I think its always a fun thing to see happen ^^
