People commonly agreed that Cataclysm sucked but in the end it still had more subs than MoP (an expansion that was objectively better than Cata), WoD and probably Legion.

The problem is that paid MMORPGs by design relies on people being long term subscribers, being accessible to new players is a must but not when it removes any potential emotional bond that a person might make with your game. Monthly fees already limits the amount of people willing to try out your game and the ones that does have a certain expectation. If you're gonna break that expectation and still keep the subs, then you'll lose more players than gain - not to mention that new players aren't an infinite source.

Instead of fundamentally breaking FFXIV, we need our own Cataclysm that redesigns the leveling experience so it's fun for new players.
