I guess another thing to say is that I have seen a lot of mediocre or seemingly lazy/semi afk play by mentors, but then again maybe they are having a bad day, or distracted by children, or sick, or tired, or they have an injury, or disability, or some other issue you don't know about – any of which might be affecting their game play – so it is possible that they are not being malicious but just have something else going on, just like any other players. Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to turn off the mentor icon is there? But even mentors who are playing poorly should still try to be patient or helpful if possible.

Also I think some mentors get treat shitty by other players, yes they have cleared x dungeon but it may have been years since they was last in it. Some may even be too embarrassed to say "hey I can't remember this one". Players see the crown and automatically think their a mentor so they know everything, yet a quick glance at their stats and they have only one tank leveled plus arcanist and everything else crafts.

Some people don't even realise what each mentor symbol means, they could have trade or pvp or maybe just the crown to say they know a bit of everything but not enough to say I want to specialise in advice for PvE.

Then you have the douchbags who have mentor just so they can get the mount .
