Maybe the other person needed it for a lower level job of the same role. In any case; if you were there specifically for gear for another job, you should have run as that job. If it just happened to be something you could use for another job, then you're really only entitled to ask if the others would be willing to pass on it for you. You can simply wait to roll, ask, and if everyone agrees to pass, give them time to do so, and then roll to get the item.

The need lockout is designed to stop people from trying to claim "need" for gear for every job in the game at the same time, not to stop someone from rolling on a piece of gear lower than the one they have. Maybe they need the seals, or the desynth, or the glamour. The point is they're currently playing a job that can equip that item; that's all that's necessary for them to be entitled to it.

As much as it sucks when some one needs on a piece of gear you were wanting if you are not on that job to 'need' yourself unless you had asked at the start of the dungeon you can't really complain much. Personally I'll only greed on stuff to be fair to others unless it is something I intend to actually equip, there have been a few occasions where I have needed on gear with the intent to trade them for seals to get mats for my anima. You can say do fates or leves for seals but trading gear you get way more seals that way.

OP you have 6 jobs at lv 60 and unless you levelled them all in Potd you know how the system works. Have you ever 'needed' on gear you were going to use for something else?

As others have already said it doesn't matter what the need is whether its a gear upgrade, seals, desynth, glamor everyones need is different and just as important. Most people if you ask will pass on items you ask for but don't expect people to just know you need that item for another job, no one is able to read your mind.

I'd just prefer people to play more fair and let others have chance of getting those seals/Gil/de-synthesis as well.

You don't see me yelling at you in-game if you need item, at most I'll just sigh and continue the run. And at the end, if there has been somebody mass-needing everything, I more target my commendation towards others who weren't as greedy. Luckily it's rare enough to see that sort of people, been happy enough to see most of the people greed -rolling items.

Can you not take the 5 seconds to type: "Hey, I need X for my other class, can you all pass on that piece?" Most of the time people will need or greed on gear for GC seals or glam or w/e without a second thought; but when asked most people will defer.

Recently I was running Alex Creator for the glamour (one of my favourite sets), I only needed one more foot item to finish the set. I must've run that thing 20+ times with no luck, and queues took a while because I was going on a damage class. So I was trying for days. Finally I rolled high and hoped for the best. Wasn't paying attention to chat after battle because I was so bored from running it over and over, so I didn't see till after I finally got the item that someone else had asked for it. A few of them went all caps-lock on me saying that they had come in there as friends to try to upgrade that person's gear. They started calling me names and such. With how rude they were afterward I was kind of glad I wasn't paying attention to them.
Either way, I would have politely told them that I had been trying for days and really wanted to finish my set, so I'm sorry but I need it too.

I can, but that has no bearing on my post.

Here any player will be wearing uncapped tomestone gear in a matter of three or four days, dungeon gear wasn't meant to be more than a very temporary upgrade.
WoW had a comparable currency based gear system before FFXIV 1.0 was even around. From Wrath on, there have been pretty reliable ways to gear up without needing the dungeon or raid drops in and of themselves, unless you were doing top tier raiding. While they've backed off the currency based system in favor of simply raining random loot down on you, there are still a plethora of alternatives to dungeon and raid gear for anyone not doing top tier content, so it is not unlike FFXIV in that regard. If anything, I've always assumed the big difference was the inability to see if people rolled need or greed on something.

Besides, people don't just do it in dungeons, though some of those dungeons are dropping gear better than 230 anyway. They do it in Weeping City and I'm sure they'll do it in Dun Scaith once the cap is removed. It's just the default loot behavior in this game.

When I play off-role and see gear I want for either glamour or stats, I just ask my party if they need/want it, or if they mind that I have it for said glamour or stats. It has never once failed me. Usually if someone wants it for seals or desynth, and you speak up saying you want to actually use it, people sometimes understand. Sometimes, communication is all that is needed. If someone were to take it regardless, I would understand, it's why I ask, not demand.

Do not expect people to simply pass on anything with the impression they can read your mind.

I had a Monk start complaining in Dun Scaith on week 2 after I beat his roll for the MNK body piece. I was in regular Shire gear, he was in like, i240, and he simply .couldn't understand that my running this raid for cool new glamour pieces was 100% as much a valid reason to roll on gear as his loot catch-up

I guess I was just supposed to pass ond hope it dropped on the next run? Sure, that sounds fair.

it's already fair because they can need stuff for their own jobs. you shouldn't presume other people need seals/gil/desynthesis, most people don't do desynthesis and even if they do it might not be of that item type. many people stay capped on GC seals cause they don't spend it.

    ---

worry about yourself and communicate when you want to operate outside the norm, the norm here doesn't have to change for a small handful of greedy people.
