Yeah I was in the same situation with the healer gear. I'm supposed to miss out on the neat look of the new robe just because I worked to cap my scripture every week and already had my Shire coat? I don't think so.I had a Monk start complaining in Dun Scaith on week 2 after I beat his roll for the MNK body piece. I was in regular Shire gear, he was in like, i240, and he simply .couldn't understand that my running this raid for cool new glamour pieces was 100% as much a valid reason to roll on gear as his loot catch-up
I guess I was just supposed to pass ond hope it dropped on the next run? Sure, that sounds fair.

If you want better odds on gear you actually need, then go on that specific job or try asking beforehand. You'll often find people willing to pass if you ask politely.
why not?, I need those low level gear to get GC seals, if you need gear for your class play with that class.

If something drops and I can need on it, I almost always will unless someone specifically asks for X item beforehand. Otherwise, even if I don't need it for gear progression, I always need the GC seals or gear for my retainers. The system is fine the way it is now.

Let me preface that I agree with the OP in the sense that I usually find Needing on an item that isn't a personal upgrade for you to be in very bad taste.
But, I'm not down on it or the people that do it in THIS particular game because in most dungeon situations usually you're the only person of your Job there that can Need on such items and dungeon gear is very easily replaced and practically worthless most of the time anyway.
I usually play tanks so I almost never have any competition for any Job specific drop for me, but when I'm leveling a dps class, if there is someone there that can also Need on the same stuff as me, I usually just ask. A polite "hey, I really need the upgrades from this dungeon if they drop, do you mind passing?" can go a long way.

Sorry, but no.
I remember when WOD was still relatively new and I did a run with my healer. Healer gloves dropped after the first boss and I needed on them cause they looked nice for glamour, which resulted in an ongoing rant from the other healer for the rest of the entire raid. He kept going on about how much of an asshole I am for needing it when he could have increased his ilvl by 1 or 2. Excuse me, for I can't sympathize with people like that.
I'm a decent person and I have had people playing the same job as me saying "Hey, I can see that your ilvl is higher than mine, so would you mind passing the gear if you don't necessarily need it for anything?" There. That's all it takes and 99% of the time I'll say "Sure, I'll pass it." All it takes is communication and not being a dick about everything in this game, wich is rare these days.
It's how SE made the loot system in FFXIV and I don't think you have to justify yourself for it as long as it remains this way. It's an entire different story if they decide to change it up of course.

Oh, so according to OP, I queue as a healer and OP queues as a bard, and you should be allowed to need on healer gear while I have to greed? Screw that noise.
If you want the gear, you best be playing as that job and if not, then you get what's left over.

Why are you more entitled that someone actually playing said job who put in just as much effort as you to complete the instance? Here's a hint, you're not.I'm fully aware of people who go for gear in dungeons for glamour, but shouldn't that be even more of a reason for them to have to use the Greed command? I mean, YOU don't really need that gear anymore anyway since your level is higher, so why should you still be entitled to take it away automatically when someone else in your party might need it, regardless whether they are playing the class for it in a dungeon or not?

Im on both sides of the fence. First off... yes asking simply "Can you pass if you dont need?" goes a long way... HOWEVER! Not everyone will go by that. Some people just roll need simply b/c the option is there and they get some personal satisfaction outta it. its annoying yes.. dont run with those people![]()

But that is the issue. This isn't a matter of main spec upgrade. The OP wanted gear for a job that isn't the job she's playing as. So no one in the party knew that it was gear she wanted, and she probably didn't ask or spoke up when it dropped. So if the healer wanted a DRG piece and I'm playing as DRG cause I want DRG glamour, and the healer doesn't speak up, then I'm taking it. If the healer said they needed it, then I'll most likely passAt least from my perspective, this is one bizarre deviation from a trend towards otherwise being nicer and more helpful than WoW. While WoW's cultural rules pertaining to loot have become somewhat degraded and more varied over the years due to changes to the rules and the grouping system, originally the generally agreed upon rules were that main spec upgrades took priority over all other gear uses and you should pass or greed if it's not an upgrade in and of itself.
