If you're gonna ask how a fight works, why not just look it up first?

Anyway maybe i'm the odd here but if someone asks me about a fight i'll gladly explain, i don't mind communicating with people in a MMO. I actually like when people start talking (not insulting) with each other since 99% of the time people don't even talk at all. I won't generalize or discuss people tastes, some people look up about fights and others will not, all i do is try to be understanding and forgiving with people and try to not break it into rocket science.

^ This is the kind of thing that can make a duty go a lot smoother with a new person compared to those who get all whiny because the newbie simply asked for help.
Whats wrong with giving them the guidance? If they're told the info they need, they can perform a lot better than not being told because they were expected to know beforehand.

Would you rather deaths and wipes because you couldn't take a minute to explain?

Actually, I'm of the mindset of for a boss with a lot of mechanics to deal with, in the first attempt we'll let them go at it totally blind (unless they specifically ask for explanation beforehand), then as that occurs then I'll watch what trips people up, and explain it to them. That way, they have a chance to solve it themselves (being a kinaesthetic-mathematical learner that is how I best learn). I don't mind a wipe on the first attempt to let them have a chance to figure it out first time on their own.

It is always interesting to see, when new content comes out their are no guides and there is fun in learning new encounters with out help and to progress through trial and error. But if you come late to the party there is the mind set that you better know the fight or get out AT least in some MMOs but honestly I haven't had anyone tell me to look it up if I don't know a fight and they have been happy to explain the important parts of the fight.

But anyway back to my original train of thought. I don't mind looking at video but its almost like a spoiler too me to see a well polish group take on a boss, seeing all their mechanics, the change of the music...maybe I am just weird.. :3

It's more sad than funny how the majority of the responses to this topic seem to have completely missed the point. It's not about if the players should enter a fight prepared or not (that's another discussion), but about people who join the fights without having checked a guide while expecting the party to write them a text guide there in the instance. It doesn't make any sense to me either.

Because you aren't supposed to do research for a video game. You can't ask for people to do things outside of the game just because you are not willing to explain in your party chat. If you blame those people being lazy for not looking on YouTube videos so you must do for yourself for not explaining in game.

Would you go to a chess tournament expecting someone to take the time to explain you the rules of the game before you can start playing? Would you then answer "I'm not supposed to do research for a game" to all the people in the tournament complaining that you are wasting their time?

If we were to take your (flawed) logic further, it'd mean that people who are figuring out the best rotation or BiS gear and talking about that on forums shouldn't exist.
You are expected to know your rotation. Why don't you apply the same thing to knowing how to deal with an encounter? Both are the same thing: knowing and understanding game mechanics in order not to be a burden to the people you play with.

Also, FFXIV is a MMORPG with complex mechanics. If you can't deal with the fact that the "game" expand beyond what's in the chatbox, then what are you doing on these forums in the first place?
Damn this "everything should be done inside the game hurr durr" argument is pissing me off. Especially when people came "outside" the game to tell that.

Whenever someone asks about a fight, I respond with: "Eat pills, avoid Ghosts. Sometimes eat Ghosts too." I don't give out info to first-timers; I'd rather they enjoy the experience first.

That's not anywhere near the same thing. If you're going to a tournament, you're going to compete for some mixture of money, fame, or whatever, because you're serious about the game in question. A better comparison would be being invited to play a game of field soccer from chums at work, and them getting mad at you cause you have no idea how to play.
