    I believe informed should be influenced. I could be mistaken, but every time I read it the wording doesn't make sense and I've never seen an example like this used in any of my other readings.

    No, this is an accurate use of the word. It's rare, but it's not incorrect. See this definition from dictionary.com:

    "Inform: to give evident substance, character, or distinction to; pervade or permeate with manifest effect:
    A love of nature informed his writing."
