Fights in FFXIV have lots of archetypes. Sophia is a brain training one where you have to pay attention to what she is doing so you won't get hit, with some burst damage moments. it's the kind of fight I hate.

Sephirot EX is my kind of fight: sustained damage to keep healing, arena awareness and party cooperation.

You will probably want close to the 700 mark for a tank. You can pick up the Shire body which will instantly get you there. Or you can meld T4 materias to your gear.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar. How would I go about doing this? I've been doing dailies pretty regularly, and never saw materia on the reward list

Beast tribes in non-expansion content reward Materia once you get to a certain level (Trusted? I forget). These include the beast tribes in Wester La Noscea, Outer La Noscea, Southern Thanalan and East Shroud(ugh).

You can also get Tier V material for running Weeping City weekly and for running Palace of the Dead through floor 50.

Each Beast Tribe daily awards you a number of trust points with that Beast Tribe. Once you have enough, a quest opens up that allows you to up your rank with the tribe. Upping your rank will unlock a new set of daily quests. The highest rank set of daily quests are the ones that will award you Materia. Just keep plugging away at those dailies, and be sure to do the rank-up quests when they become available, and you'll get there eventually!

So is it just a one time bonus where I receive materia when I rank up, or is there a vendor materia is made available through once I get to the appropriate level?

For each quest you complete in the last tier of quests you choose a materia as a reward, so for each beast tribe you have at max rank you can get 3 a day. It is a random selection of materia though, so you might not always see what you are after.

The thing to keep in mind about EX primals is that they are largely nothing more than a dance. A few are light exceptions, but for better or worse it just comes down to route memorization. The reason I think most people say that Sophia EX is so far the easiest on release, is that a run is still salvageable even a few people fail mechanics. Take that in comparison to Sephirot EX where, while the amount of memorization is roughly the same (imo), one or two people missing the ball often results in a wipe.
