I totally agree that the current job balance is yet another reason to expect open world dueling, rather than a free-for-all styled PvP. It's not intended to be serious. Current dueling has no challenges, no score, and no ranked league. It's just a bit of fun and shenanigans. I can't imagine open-world PvP working any differently, because it would be impossible to take a serious approach to it. You can't have a ranked league, for example, without official match ups, and challenges would be a joke because you could rig all your challenges by dueling against a friend ("alright, your turn. You kill me x amount of times as drg" ... etc).

That said, it's not impossible for them to expand the system to allow for duels in a party. That would go some ways to addressing balancing issues, as well as the possibilities of what we could achieve with open world PvP.

Another thing worth noting is that I'm fairly certain that SE did mention, at some point during the fan festival, that our skills and jobs would be seeing an overhaul in the next expansion. They specifically mentioned Cross Class skills (such as Provoke), redundant skills (such as Feint), as well as general handling. Yoshi has expressed an interest in the past for making jobs easier to pick up and run with while also retaining a unique feel/identity. Of course, none of us really know what that will translate to in practice. I highly doubt that anything major will change, or that we'll see totally different styled gameplay/attack animations. However, job balancing could see an adjustment. We already know for certain that War and Schl will be seeing modest utility nerfs in 4.0, for example; although, they have been very tight lipped about how, exactly, they intend to implement those nerfs.

I used to play an MMORPG called lotro which had a zone specifically for pvp and it worked out well. It was a bit different since instead you played as a monster (spiders, wargs, orcs, etc.) but I think it could work well in this game. The main bases can be set up similarly to how they are in frontline (except the map should probably be at least as big as a HW map). The main goal was to pretty much capture keeps and outposts which had bosses protecting them, and of course you and your allies would also be protecting them. There was also plenty of side pve too (nothing that interacted with the main part of the game) which could be fun, but it was mostly used as a fill in when there weren't many people online. If one side was heavily outnumbered, they got a buff so they weren't as bad off, though it didn't help much. I think to fix balance issues number-wise, if a GC is outnumbered they will get a buff that actually will make a significant difference (and if they're heavily outnumbered, they should be walking gods, just to balance things out)

Oh man...cant help but wonder why the hell some of you are in the pvp section to begin with. "No open world, jobs unbalanced, don't ruin mah pve experience"- yadda yadda yadda...yet some of yew are the exact same ones bitching about the que times. (Ya ya I know, keep pvp in its place sermon again)

Seriously, HELL yes to open world..and job balance be damned. Considering theres no threat whatsoever on the open road, with all mobs being on a 10-inch return to spawn chain, I'd actually LIKE to have to look over my back, or throw a cautious eye at that lala walking by me.

Would be easy enough to set up too...if pvps not your thing, SE could simply make an option in config for not allowing you to be attacked, which you simply toggle on or off.

Just find it so damn laughable how everyone always immediately jumps to the negative aspects of ideas and says why it absolutely can't/won't work insteada looking at the ways in which it actually might. (and spare your tramatic-'well when I palyed THIS MMO'- stories...how else can progress be made?

I don't think open world pvp is a good idea for the game.
Maybe a big instance like diadem or a server specific pvp.
This game is way too PVe oriented for open world pvp.

Have it toggled or have different channels and I'll be fine with it.

    Totally agree.

No matter how SE decides to implement this (assuming they even do), I don't think it will be all doom and gloom. FFxiv is, and always has been, extremely PvE oriented. There's no way in hell they'd do something to intentionally alienate their main player base. That, as well as numerous other pieces of evidence, points me in the direction of open-world dueling, but even if they made it a free-for-all style or PvP zones, there would most definitely be safeguards in place which would allow PvE cry babies, crafters, and gatherers, ways of opting out of the system. That just seems like common sense to me, so I'm gonna work with that assumption and support the idea. It would be good for the community on the whole, not just PvP'ers. I imagine that there'd be a lot of Dps players out there would actually appreciate a open-world PvP system, given how long their queue times average out to.

While I expect general design philosophies will keep SE from making too big a (potentially) negative impact on PvE to pave a way for its PvP anyways, I honestly think that all PvEers are really looking for is a way to have their play experience or productivity be based less on whatever others are doing. Many of the PvP complaints are in a similar vein to "not enough sheep", "stop ninja'ing hunts", or "why I hate FATE trains". As long as their productivity isn't especially affected in areas that are also preferable for PvE, PvP itself is a non-issue. At worst, it becomes a matter of "not fitting the lore" or whatnot, or... giving the wrong vibes somehow, despite a war where factions do bring in a fair bit of hostility between whatever times courier quests and catering for your own banquet, etc., bring them together.

As long as we're talking something as vague as "open world PvP", rather than any particular iteration thereof, there will be fears, many of them unreasonable, but that's just because it's such an all-encompassing topic. Test some interesting, more specific ideas on the same people and you're not likely to get such a knee-jerk negative reaction.

Case in point: my first thought from "open world PvP" is my leveling hubs being unaccessible because of bored level-capped people killing every player and NPC within sight of it. My first thought from "FC warfare" was something pretty epic... though I'll still have my doubts that SE can pull it off without it being plagued with oversights, and whatever most closely equivocates to botting or win-trading.
