When they take over the town, you can not buy stuff there, teleport there etc, it turns into a enemy stronghold.

The FATES remind me of the RIFTS in RIFT, they should take a look at that game add stuff like environment changing etc.
The issue is that if there aren't enough people to succeed at the FATE or if people just can't be bothered, then everyone gets screwed over and that would be a killer on lower population servers. This would also screw up the progression for the MSQ since you will have to go everywhere sooner or later and people would complain about being blocked off from the MSQ if the area it took place in had way stronger mobs overnight because of a failed FATE.

Wouldn't necessarily do it for a week but at least until players took it back somehow

Kinda like besieged in ffxi. Failed. Say good bye to the astral candesense. No more runic portals or sanction for you.

Only way to get it back is to venture into the enemy strong hold and take it back.

Or stemming from above fight your way through the village and defeat the boss that has taken up residence.

Things like this could do a lot to bring the open world to life

The devs did hint at this back in beta when they were discussing the future of hamlet defence. The status of the world would ever change depending on events and player actioms.

Gatherers and crafters could bolster the hamlets defences in preparation for the next beast men attack... or help repair after a failed defence.

This. The Fate system is a defining feature of FF XIV v2.0 and beyond and it just need improvements to make it more fun. They have done some fun ones in the past like the chain-fate defending highbridge, and boss fates like Odin.
So, longer and more interesting fates to rouse interest along with rewards which are worth going back for multiple times. For a long time the big fates like cyclops, crab, chimera have sorely needed allied seals / centurio seals, something along those lines to make it worth going back for.

Yes they dialed back on the Fates in HW. As far as the multi step fate is concerned its kind of a pain to do those now, especially now that no one is doing it. IDK every day I travel through all the HW areas, and see maybe 1 person doing fates, but then come here and see complaining it just makes 0 sense to me.

While I see your point with improving existing systems, it is also important to try out those new things as well. I wouldn't mind seeing some city attacks but there needs to be a real threat, which this world has lost a lot of. Maybe we will see more of that kind of thing when the empire makes their move again. Seriously HW felt like one big tangent to get Ishgard to help... LOL

Been seeing a lot of complains about Palace of the Dead as well and I don't understand that at all... its essentially a classic style dungeon crawl with random involved, which is amazing, there's no cap on it, you can get xp, you can get a challenge out of it if you enter solo, no party comp restrictions, you can refresh your brain on jobs you haven't played in a while using it... its a piece of content that I believe is stepping in the right direction. Could it be better? Sure it could, but anything everywhere could be better. I personally love it, I mean maybe 395872957 runs later I'll be bored, but right now its a nice break from the norm.

I'd quite like Hamlet Defense back, along with a revival of the Amalj'aa/Ixali/Kobold, who have all just become plot-irrelevant at this point... 3.4 is meant to be adding new Grand Company ranks, and I seem to recall Yoshida saying those were delayed because he wanted actual content along with them, rather than just another seal grind, so hopefully we get something new there... The preliminary 3.3 patch notes actually had a map of Gridania with a path marked indicating a zone to Lily Hills, that was corrected in the final patch notes with a comment that it displayed something still in development... It's most likely that's related to the new housing thing they mentioned a while back, but I really hope it's a Hamlet for Hamlet Defense... Besieged was really great in XI, I can't help but imagine what it would be like in XIV... We're meant to be getting our own squad at some point, and I can imagine them functioning like Retainers for Hamlet Defense; Everyone sends them off to do certain things that'll play into the coming defense, like sabotaging the enemy base or fortifying the Hamlet...

I actually made a fairly long winded rant on Grand Company content a while back... I'm really setting myself up for disappointment come 3.4, but 3.3 in general has made me slightly more optimistic lately. Palace of the Dead is the latest icing on that cake, it's the first piece of content (PvE content, at least) I've really enjoyed in a long time. It could definitely use some improvements, but it's a great start... I just hope they actually do some new stuff with floors 51+ and don't fall back into their habit of just recycling the same thing... Something like Hamlet Defense though, that would probably let me overlook FATEs... Give Hamlet Defense some real impact, so success/failure has consequence (you failed, NPCs are missing and you have to go find them... You succeeded, next time the Amalj'aa bring Ifrit along for the ride...), and I no longer expect that from FATEs... The only reason I probably expect that from FATEs at the moment is because of the superficial similarities to XIs Campaign and the fact that it apparently was meant to replace Hamlet Defense... I'd still ideally prefer FATEs with more impact, but if they're just going to be a generic leveling aid, that's fine - provided I have something with impact to fill that void...

About time they are doing more with the Grand Companies, things have just been sitting there looking stupid for much too long. The Hamlet defense thing would be cool to bring back though for sure. Besieged would just look like a fate pretty much I imagine, unless they make all the mobs tough, I would think such an addition would definitely need to be placed at a player hub so that it is used though, pretty much making players "have to deal with it" for numerous reasons, npcs not accessible that you need to get to ect... I'd also like some of the atmospheric mood to come back to the game, shroud for example, I feel like they fixed the map, but then lost some of the mood it had going for it, when odin is around is the only time it really feels magical anymore. I don't know if it was the music or what. I have a strange deep urge to explore magical creepy forests for some reason, don't mind me.

FATEs are terrific for leveling, but that's the only thing they should be used for. Tying them to quests is torturous. Anyone remember trying to unlock Crystal Tower? Beast tribe quest where you need a key item from a FATE? No thank you!
