In honor of the new Pokemon games that were released recently I present you with the following analogy to what's my opinion on FFXIV is.
I had a Wartortle(FFXI).
I was promised a Blastoise.
I got a Squirtle.
--------------------------
*Ahem*
At 1st I thought that its normal for MMOs to be released like that, then I saw how newer MMOs were at release, and remembered that this MMO's team had a very successful MMO that lasted over 8 years, thus they should be experienced and already know what they're supposed to do to make their new project at least a mediocre success.
So I preoccupied myself with a simple goal:
Get 1 craft and 1 battle class to cap while the team delivers on their promises.
Why? so I can be amongst the 1st to get the better things, make the better things, and sell the better things to get rich.
Of course, I wasn't the only one thinking that way, and many people were playing DoH classes, some not entirely sticking by the rules, and now there exists people with 4-5 crafts at/almost as cap, and even if I got to 50 on a DoW 1st, there was nothing worth while to kill or gear to obtain.
Then Tanaka & co, gave us some minor NMs and still, it wasn't interesting enough to make it worth while rushing my GLA to 50... and so I was getting sucked into a spiral of boredom and frustration.
However, once I stopped grinding my hands off, and lazed around I re-discovered that there's more to MMOs than just gear and money and that was when I started connecting to people and really forming friendships, and since then I spent most of my online time playing with friends and not worrying too much about getting non-existent endgame gear or trying to compete with no-lifers and craftbots for more high ranked DoHs.
I was happier and my NEW AND FRESH game, FFXIV, now provided me with a similar enjoyment to the one I got off FFXI when I was just logging on to the people after I did most HNMs, and got 7 jobs to 75, and treated the game like a chat program more than a game at the end of my FFXI career.
Now that's not bad, but its very far from what a new game should offer to a player, and as a game, FFXIV is step back, and as the "next FFXI" it completely and utterly failed.
I still play for the reasons mentioned above, plus clinging to the idea that Yoshi-p "Got this by the ass" and to be frank, I wouldn't mind if they shut down FFXIV and started from scratch to give us a game worthy of being FFXI's successor.
Now if it was not for the friendships that I formed through my short time on FFXIV, I would have wished that this game never existed, and that I would have been happier just standing in Aht Urgan on my PLD, waiting for friends to ask me to help kill Dark Spark or something, or just chat for the sake of chating.
