In honor of the new Pokemon games that were released recently I present you with the following analogy to what's my opinion on FFXIV is.

    I had a Wartortle(FFXI).

    I was promised a Blastoise.

    I got a Squirtle.

    --------------------------

    *Ahem*

At 1st I thought that its normal for MMOs to be released like that, then I saw how newer MMOs were at release, and remembered that this MMO's team had a very successful MMO that lasted over 8 years, thus they should be experienced and already know what they're supposed to do to make their new project at least a mediocre success.

So I preoccupied myself with a simple goal:

Get 1 craft and 1 battle class to cap while the team delivers on their promises.

Why? so I can be amongst the 1st to get the better things, make the better things, and sell the better things to get rich.

Of course, I wasn't the only one thinking that way, and many people were playing DoH classes, some not entirely sticking by the rules, and now there exists people with 4-5 crafts at/almost as cap, and even if I got to 50 on a DoW 1st, there was nothing worth while to kill or gear to obtain.

Then Tanaka & co, gave us some minor NMs and still, it wasn't interesting enough to make it worth while rushing my GLA to 50... and so I was getting sucked into a spiral of boredom and frustration.

However, once I stopped grinding my hands off, and lazed around I re-discovered that there's more to MMOs than just gear and money and that was when I started connecting to people and really forming friendships, and since then I spent most of my online time playing with friends and not worrying too much about getting non-existent endgame gear or trying to compete with no-lifers and craftbots for more high ranked DoHs.

I was happier and my NEW AND FRESH game, FFXIV, now provided me with a similar enjoyment to the one I got off FFXI when I was just logging on to the people after I did most HNMs, and got 7 jobs to 75, and treated the game like a chat program more than a game at the end of my FFXI career.

Now that's not bad, but its very far from what a new game should offer to a player, and as a game, FFXIV is step back, and as the "next FFXI" it completely and utterly failed.

I still play for the reasons mentioned above, plus clinging to the idea that Yoshi-p "Got this by the ass" and to be frank, I wouldn't mind if they shut down FFXIV and started from scratch to give us a game worthy of being FFXI's successor.

Now if it was not for the friendships that I formed through my short time on FFXIV, I would have wished that this game never existed, and that I would have been happier just standing in Aht Urgan on my PLD, waiting for friends to ask me to help kill Dark Spark or something, or just chat for the sake of chating.

I didn't play FFXI, so I had no expectations in that area, but I did expect a FF Title game, and in the area of graphics and story, I haven't been disapointed.

However, I agree with the overall sentiment of the OP, and also Sheila. The armory is bit disapointing in that there isn't much variety of armor/weapons and stats to choose from. I love the designs of most of the armor itself, but there needs to be a little more give and take in them. The physical level system sounds good on paper, but what if you want to have both physical and magic classes? Is it fair to have to distribute the points over both, when someone else can concentrate on one?

There is definitely a need for content. I have to agree, on a quieter scale, of the rinse-repeat feeling, while at the same time, wanting more assignments in general. I'm really glad they started the sidequests.

Overall, I do not feel the loads of disapointment that some do. I just see the huge potential, and I'm waiting, patiently, for it to get there. It will take time, and I would rather that they take that time than rush and mess it up. I do like what is here, and I enjoy playing it. This game does feel very different from other mmos, and I would like it to stay that way.

    My 2 cents.

I think you hit it exactly on the head. Once there's content...you will see a major shift in attitudes. Some how folks expected an MMO launch w/content. I'd like to know which MMO they are basing that expectation on.

nice proud of you. yes, i was in beta 2 so i did come in after you. since you were in beta 1 i don't know how much worse it was than in 2, but i see drastic improvements since open.

is there still alot of things to do? hell yes! there are tons of additions that need to be made. to me first is getting battle fixed, but to be honest i could deal with the laggy ui in balltes and the stuck in battle regimens if there was enough content to keep enough stuff to do. if we had the content to keep us active the majority of the minor complaints teleporting/barber shop/jumping/crafting/ party or solo/armory system would be a side note because we would have stuff to do and that's coming, but not fast enough for my taste. to me the majority of the compalints come from being bored with nothing to do so we complain about minor stuff.

Well..... I do love the Word "Free". So I feel I can't complain too much. But A chocobo would be Sooo nice >< lol

I hope they do Some sort of breeding thing with the chocobos. Make it more interactive with other players. Maybe we will get the ever elusive "Golden" chocobo this time lol :P

well maybe the way mmo's are made and launched needs to change, maybe they need to fuck off if it's not ready and packed with content at launch at this point. it's 2011, and most of us don't find a mmo with just crafting and 5minutes worth of voiceless cut scenes a rpg mmo. they do it cause they think they can get away with it and they can. i joined ffxi at na ps2 launch and it was packed in content so that is what i expected at the least from a mmo at launch but i understand that it wasn't like that for the many prior to that launch. but they can add a few things that would of kept the servers busy as shit. like adding something like sky in the game right off the bat, 0 member limitation to join and it can be done 24/7. anyone expecting what we got has been let down to many times and i think that is a problem.

also they should of been at the least combining some servers to make the population more bigger, i am pretty sure half the players that left would of probably not left if at least the stuff there is to do was doable. cause it's not doable cause it's empty. this is my biggest upset, server numbers out of any problem the game has, it is what i left warhammer for and what i'll probably leave this one for if it didn't get fixed by time they expect money from me.

I'm okay with it, but it does need a lot of work.

By that I mean, I don't hate it, so you won't see me raging against a piece of software on a forum. It seems that SE is doing what they can to fix things, and they've even waived the subscription fee, so even if I'm not totally wowed by its current state, I'm definitely curious enough to stick around and see what happens. There's quite a bit about the game that I do like, too, so I don't look at it as any more of a failure than any other "failed" MMO (IMO).

Truth is, I hate most MMOs, and I at least appreciate that SE has done something different with FFXI and XIV. Whether or not that something is good is debatable, sure. But hey -- at least it's not DC Universe Online (which I also appreciate as something that tried to be different, but...).
