Not sure if you talk to me or not. I come from FFXI and traveling there was a must. My honest opinion is games these days have been dumbbed down and brings more lazy people to the table. Don't get me wrong, I want some things we could do in the open world rather than click and just go into an instance, it just feels like a room with scrips we keep doing again and again and again and again. It's a loop pretty much. When HW was out, I was actually super excited to explore, it was the biggest excitement for me for a while in the game. Getting rekt by mobs and somewhat danger was exciting for me. Before people gonna tell me to quit the game or go back to FFXI, no I wont. I still enjoy this game and the people I play with, but some open world content and some danger would be awesome to have atleast. Sorry for the offtopic.

First thing we'd have to get rid off is flying, since that pretty much exists solely to turn the open world into a background scene. Good luck with that, it's one of the more popular features.
That aside: Gathering is entirely done in the open world. FATEs as well, most side/daily quests too. Hunts in all its forms and treasure maps are open world as well.
Lobby style is used for: PvP, Guildhests, Dungeons, Trials and Raids. In all of these cases, the lobby serves to facilitate cross-server groups, which are supposed to become a thing for Savage as well with the advent of the raid finder. Thus, the NPC is redundant and cut out.
Personally, I don't see it as a big deal. I've waited for enough mountless alliance people at Razorfen Kraul or the Scarlet Monastery to gladly say good riddance to waiting for people to show up at the entrance.

The first thing that would happen is a bunch of people suddenly being confronted by the fact that only a small percentage of people actually remember how to get to the Western Highlands, let alone CloudTop from the expansion city. Then we have all the people who haven't done enough traveling to know how to get to Limsa Lominsa from Uldah...
