Sure, but at that point you're not adding a Final Fantasy Samurai but something completely different than how it's visually portrayed in the vast majority of FF games. It's also eliminating a very solid option for adding a popular and requested job that very easily fits into this game's mold as a tank (Heavy armor, history of challenging enemies head on and defending/protecting allies). It is a massive waste of potential to use it on a role that needs no boost to it's population or incentive to be played. Especially when compared to what options you have left to choose from for potential tanks that fit the strict mold of the current tanks.
Samurai just as easily fits dps role. Putting it in the most popular role that will actually see use is never a waste. And historically they "defended" people by cutting down their enemies. Not holding aggro. History means nothing in a ff game. Paladins never called down light from the sky. And everyone met their foes head-on.
You mistakenly assume I'm referring to real word history when I say they have a history of heavy armor and defending others. I'm talking specifically in Final Fantasy games, where they have boasted many skills that support others and even protect them from damage. You're absolutely right that real world history matters very little, so it doesn't matter they were known for "cutting down their enemies instead of holding aggro." So were knights, gladiators, marauders, viking esque warriors etc etc.Samurai just as easily fits dps role. Putting it in the most popular role that will actually see use is never a waste. DRK has a history of using swords in ff. Didn't stop them from getting a scythe in XI. Bards have never used bows in ff before, but in XIV they do. Classes don't need to follow other past variations.
FFXI which supported multiple weapons per job allowed DRK to still wield greatswords, as well as the DRK unlock quest and main NPC also involved greatswords and not scythes. And bards couldn't use bows? Funny that, cause the Spoony bard Edward from ff4 could certainly equip bows.
You're right though and things don't have to necessarily follow the precedent set by past games but that doesn't change the fact that there's absolutely plenty of merit to making samurai a tank.
Everyone trying to get SAM on their side :>
SAM is hands down one of my favorite jobs, along with NIN, i love that eastern martial arts culture.
But i actually am a career tank, because i love tanking.
With that being said, even though i love SAM and tanking, I don't really wanna see SAM as a tank because i've always seen it as one of the ultimate offensive destructive jobs, so i feel like SAM would be misplaced as tank.
Even though i am a career tank and will stay a career tank.
In regards to the arguments about armor, well... I don't think usual SAM gear counts as full plate tank gear.
But it doesn't matter anyway in my opinion, so what? DRG uses heavy armor too, there even is specific gear shared between tanks and DRG, yet they don't tank.
Then you have MNK, it doesn't wear any heavy gear, yet it could actually tank in 1.0, it even had a Taunt.
Which makes all the armor arguments fly right out of the window really.
Unrelated to the thread but I'm going to say it anyway, as a drk main from FFXI I really miss my scythe. T.T
Edit: I'm also going to repeat something I said earlier that I didn't notice anyone respond to. Sam was originally intended to be the tank job for HW right? The way I interpret that, is that they were already working on and designing samurai tank but at some stage in it's development they stopped and said "let's do dark knight instead." I really don't think that means the samurai tank idea as a whole got scrapped, merely pushed back. I strongly believe they are going to finish it from whatever stage of development it was at and give us the version of the tank they envisioned for HW originally before drk.

I meant more that bards were not archers. But yeah samurai has enough merit to be a tank. Same with every class. I just hope it's not. For biased reasons.FFXI which supported multiple weapons per job allowed DRK to still wield greatswords, as well as the DRK unlock quest and main NPC also involved greatswords and not scythes.
