Doesn't matter which one will whine louder. One of those roles is far more important in terms of making sure content pops often without an atrocious wait time.if "samurai" was a tank role would a red/blue mage with sword(s) dps satisfy the group that wants a sword dps? probably not....which group do we want to hear whine more when SE hits us with their plan; the ones who want samurai tank or the ones wanting a "good" sword dps class, lol? With the current armory system and direction I don't think samurai would come as both tank and dps.
Also, funny how a lot of media people are referencing for samurai involve the titular samurai characters defending others. Kenshin, Samurai Seven etc. Hmm, which role is about defending others I wonder?
(I know this was from a few pages ago but I needed time to collect the resources to make this post.)Many have often quoted interviews as to where Yoshida has claimed Samurai would better fit the DPS role, however as I personally have not been able to find the quote, it has always been somewhat suspect to myself (not saying it is non existent, I simply have not been able to verify). What information I have found is in the video link posted below, specifically 22:15 begins a break down of how each job is not only chosen by the Entire team, but also specifically mentions that out of Two possible Tank options both DRK and SAM were in essence already designed for the role.

The article in question where it was first mentioned is actually this japanese interview from Game Watch. This is the first article that began the spreading of "Yoshi-P said SAM is a DPS!" that goes around, and it comes from a very simplified translation summary that was posted (to reddit I believe) that basically said "In Yoshida's head he sees SAM as a dps."
But when you actually translate the interview, it goes more in depth as to why. He reiterates that Samurai was initially the developer's choice for Heavensward's tank(meaning depsite how Yoshi felt about it, it was still on the development floor as a potential tank). But then the decision was later changed to Dark Knight to better fit the theme of Ishgard. Then he goes into talking about the mental image of what he pictures in his mind when he thinks about a Samurai. And that is of a kinagashi wearing iaido master.
In bold is 着流し = Kinagashi. 居合 = Iaido. For those who don't know, a kinagashi looks like this:Originally Posted by Yoshida
僕の中の侍のイメージは、着流しに刀を下げ、居合の達人という感じです。どちらかと言えば、ロールはDPSのイメージの方が強いのです。
This explains a lot when you then look at when Yoshida thinks about a Samurai and why he's say it would make more sense as a dps. And why later he would talk about things like calling a tank samurai a Shogun because again he thinks of samurai as the later ronin-like archetype, not a warrior decked out in ornate armor.
So that becomes an issue, you see plenty of people clamoring for a DPS Samurai, but I have a feeling a lot of them would be disappointed if they ended up with essentially a robe wearing version of a samurai, and not the big armored version.
So in a sense, not even Yoshida sees the armored variety of samurai as a DPS.

I can see where youre going with this, anf it made a little more sense, in the case that youre speaking of though the classic samurai look in FF has always been the shogun, heavy armored one, so it could very likely be a tank. Though before 11 they really didnt have much in place of signature moves, tactics had them blade grasp(up to 99% evasion physical with full brave) and using katana as consumable items for aoe spell effects. Earlier there was GIL TOSS in ff5 and then Cyan from FF6 using several high powered blade attacks(but they were slow charging) as for the classic image of samurai and what it has been in previous iterations, has been a katana wielding, heavy armor using melee.
you know is not true this point? it will not make the tank more present because you will add samurai as job that can tank, at best for 2 month you will have a bit more tank before it get down. you are the one ignoring this fact and simply want to play a samurai tank while being already a tank as main....
I just hope whatever Samurai becomes, it's a romanticized version. I'm a suckered for flashy moves and outfits. If it becomes a tank it's gonna be sad when 90% of the community drops it in a month like DRK and we see one once in a blue moon.
It doesn't need to be a permanent increase to be worth it 2 months of an increase of tank population during the launch of an expansion is more that worth it. And it's better than the alternative of the number of tanks going DOWN during those 2 months because you only added dps jobs. If you can't see that logic then that's on you. You're the one who is in constant denial every time you crop up in these kinds of threads. I'm done trying to reason with you and your narrow and inflexible viewpoints.you know is not true this point? it will not make the tank more present because you will add samurai as job that can tank, at best for 2 month you will have a bit more tank before it get down. you are the one ignoring this fact and simply want to play a samurai tank while being already a tank as main....
I could say you are just as biased because you main a dps and want it to be a dps. The difference is I will play samurai regardless of its role, and that is why I realize that it being released as a dps can hurt tank numbers if no other tank is released. I very much prefer tanking but even I would give it up to play SAM if it happens to be a dps.

The only way Arbiter can even tank decently is if it takes a very specific subset of souls and if it doesn't it is by far one of the worst tanks in rift. To make it even a mage melee tank you first have to take both arbiter and Harbinger which means you are mixing a melee magic dps with a ranged magic tank. Not too mention the only way arbiter can tank is through spamming a shit ton of shields but also by using a ton of self healing abilities to help it survive through some of the crazy burst in that game. This is basically how I think a caster tank would work here. Of course, we do have the issue of gear being too split up as is. You have fending, striking, maiming, scouting, healing and casting; it's not an easy division like Rift and WoW have (plate, mail, leather, cloth).
If you want a tank like something similar to what the arbiter is when its at its best then we already have it and thats a warrior.
I really hope SAM is DPS, we need a sword based DPS job or they can do the class > two jobs again and please both sides.
