Can't think outside the box if the devs basically want jobs to be contained in 3 different boxes.
This, honestly. Presently a tank is (1) higher (m)Defense, (2) % mitigation CDs, (3) enmity-modded skills, and (4) a tank stance, with a less crucial side of resource and resource builders (mana/stacks), and where GLD is leveled to 22 or higher. The goal could be accomplished in far more ways than just an arsenal of CDs (Inner Beast, etc.), and yet I pretty well doubt this fairly exact design will change without some underlying changes in design philosophy across the game.

^ this. Because changing fundaments of how the game's balance (or simply role system) is currently working would make mess greater than you think it would. Honesty, i don't believe, that nobody would whine: "Booo! RDM-tank unplayable!" "I can't get used to running around to live, please turn sprint into TP free skill"
Tank has full plate armor, casters/agile-oriented dps wear rags, slow burst-dmg type dps like DRG wear semi-plate armors.
It's Final Fantasy, not TERA or WoW. Don't expect Mages-tanks in sexy robes, showing off, casting (Red mage without casting? or casting time MAX 2 sec, so you won't get interrupted?) powerful spells from 3 yalms distance to hold aggro and recieve dmg lower than semi-plated samurai as dps around thinking "maybe i should just become a gardener..."
You have glamour. And its enough.
What armor a class wears is pointless if the only thing that matters is base stats on each piece. With glamour it's actually even more skewed since you just take gear with the best stats and glamour something you like on it.
Technically one of the Red Mages de facto skills to offset it's lower spell pool was Dualcast(let's be honest swiftcast kinda already does this unless they make RDM do it all the time) or the ability to chainspell. If the BLM doesn't get Annihilation in next expansion Red Mage might get it since it combines Fire and Ice together. Albeit at a long cast time/cooldown. Maybe 5 minutes cooldown and a 10 second cast time.
What is Annihilation? Ascian Prime spell. Running by the game's jaded lore concepts it looks like probably the ultimate BLM spell.
Uhm, a 60% decrease in def and 30% decrease in mdef in comparison to the other tanks is fairly significant (even if not completely visible). A 28% lower mdef was one of the major causes of Dragoon "floor tanking" in endgame prior to the the patch that brought Maiming gear mdef into parity with Striking/Scouting/Aiming gear.
Yes, but by no means does it have to come from the base Defense / magDef values. Other modifiers or buffs can easily bring about equivalent passive eHP with low Def/mDef. In past few comments everyone mention a lot of fantastical damage dealing abilites they would love to see in RDM repertuar. And i didnt find single cooldown idea. You guys want faster tank queues as RDM, or to actually be a tank as RDM?
Because creating tanking class starts from concept. Your concept posses only damage dealing aspects. DRK is getting shadowskin on 2 level.
Have you ever wondered why SE made shadowskin on level 2 despite the fact earliest synchronized thing starts at level 10 (1st guildhest)? I bet you didn't. I will tell you. Sit down. It's story time.
Each level of tank role is supposed to be playable, on level 2 you must be able to win against Test_Dummy(lvl.2) which has statistics same for all classes. Becuase of different statistics for tank role, you should be able to win with more HP left than dps but after longer time.
First go cooldown's. They are tanks.

Also, dualcasting a spell doesn't mean it has to deal damage.
