are you really bringing lore into this? well then its actually a more complicated process than that, from what I gather, there is no hole and there is no ball, you are using the aetheric energy from the materia stone and imbuing the weapon or armour with it, in a sense you are augmenting the gear with aether to increase its strength, that sounds like something that only someone with a knowledge of how the gear is constructed would be able to do.

Materia melding as a concept is far different from how it was in FFVII, these are two different universes.

Sounds like a copout excuse since some gear obviously has materia slots visible on it via the gear description. When you overmeld however you are using crafting techniques to meld more slots in. If you did not overmeld those slots wouldn't even show up to begin with.

Using the lore excuse there would be a lot of stuff need changed.

For example, why does a sandwich require 59 cooking compared to a souffle needing only 39.

Lore should never be a reason to change something so saying its just putting balls in a hole isn't really a reason to change something.

adding to the lore: melding is introduced to the character via a MSQ involving taking a piece of gear to a npc and having the npc meld materia into the gear. Realistically, that's what the supporters of this idea want: an npc to meld into existing slots (no overmelding, still have to have the materia and catalyst, and have to pay a progressive fee based on the materia tier being melded)

    This would be acceptable.

I saw that quest more as exactly what people have to do now, actually.

Minfilia asks you to take some gear to a crafter to meld it for them. :P
