Why are folks so amazed that there's a high-gil-cost portion of the new relic quest? The old relic had TWO: the materia-melding phase, and - surprise - a crafted-item phase.

Additionally, the very first stage for the original Relics had a significant cost as well, in early 2.0. While 2 Materia Melds may not seem like much compared to Novus, Grade IIIs were far more rare back then, and also in high demand because of Relics and Pentamelds, as well as level 50 DoH quests, and there was also a crafted step for the first stage too, since you needed the base weapon.

As for "why on earth"—systems that encourage interaction between different groups of players have been SE's modus operandum for well over a decade in their MMOs, and we've seen crafters involved in the Relic quest before as a result. We'll see them involved again in the future, I'm sure.
