But if I go to get a haircut, and there's a 25 minute wait when I walk in, I can put in my name and go next door and eat without losing my place in line.
An indefinite pause would be too easy to abuse, but a 5-10 minute hold wouldn't be unreasonable.

In the case of a haircut you're waiting on the barber who presumably knows how long he will take. With a duty queue you're waiting on other players. 7 people shouldn't have to wait for one.

And they wouldn't have to. It would just be a matter of changing your status so you don't get matched with a party/instance.

Except it's not.
Say you're number 4 on the healer queue list for Diadem. You hit the pause button, walk away for 3 minutes, and 7 healers have entered while you were away. You unpause, and you're next in line to be paired up.
Yes this could be horribly abused, so there would have to be a time limit on the pause before it times out, it would have to be done before your pairing starts for an instance, and there would need to be a limit on how often you can use it.
It could also kick on/off automatically when getting a CS for a quest.
